Excellent book, Very keen judgments invariably supported by firm argument and reason. If Andrew Marr is for the general reader, this is the A Level text book. For most lay persons the complexity of the review of economic policies might be hard to follow. Most will nod sagely at each section, but as someone who lived through that era and has found factual errors in most other books this one seems accurate and well researched.

It is not an easy read but worth the effort. The author was a founder of UKIP although I do not think he remains a supporter. Where they talk about Europe he presents his case well and the follies of every government. Perhaps there is no single answer to the UK's problems.

Haven't finished the entirety of the book yet but from what I have read "attle's 1945 to 1951 government" to the "conservative anti-climax 1959-1964" the book is throughly well written , particularly detailed on foreign policy particularly with an emphasis on Anglo-American friendships and European integration. However I would like more detailed section on individual governments domestic policy (economic policy is discussed) but education, transport , justice and societal matters are skimmed rather than indulged

Scholarly tome which gives due credit/blame to each political party for their achievements during a turbulent time in Britain's slide from global preeminence to mere onlooker in geopolitical machinations. Where have you gone,Winston, the century's titanic figure?
Highly recommended!!
