Product Description

Based on a true story, The Possession is the terrifying story of how one family must unite in order to survive the wrath of an unspeakable evil.

Clyde (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Stephanie Brenek (Kyra Sedgwick) see little cause for alarm when their youngest daughter Em becomes oddly obsessed with an antique wooden box she purchased at a yard sale. But as Em’s behavior becomes increasingly erratic, the couple fears the presence of a malevolent force in their midst, only to discover that the box was built to contain a dibbuk, a dislocated spirit that inhabits and ultimately devours its human host.

I am a big horror fan and found this very enjoyable. Supposedly based on true events, but make of that what you will.
It starts off with a woman about to smash a box with a hammer, she's atacked be an unseen force and is thrown around.
Then the main story kicks in,as two girls spend time with their father (recently seperated from his wife),Emily finds an antique box at a yard sale and soon becomes obsessed with it.
Her behaviour becomes increasingly odd after she has trouble getting into the box,but finally opens it. In it she finds a dead moth and a ring which she slips on her finger,a ring that is clearly not wise to wear.
Soon moths becomes very much a part of the story, making their presence known.
As things get more and more sinister,it soon becmes clear...the box shouldn't have been opened! Too late!

This didn't disappoint,it may not be fantastic or highly original, but it works fine as a supernatural horror, one i think most horror fans will enjoy.

The Possession is directed by Ole Bornedal and written by Juliet Snowden and Stiles White. It stars Natasha Calis, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Kyra Sedgwick and Madison Davenport. Music is by Anton Sanko and cinematography by Dan Lausten.

Film is based upon a story involving a Jewish Dybbuk Box that unleashes a demonic spirit that tries to take control of a human being.

Actually it really isn't as bad as the ratings it currently holds on the big internet movie sites suggests it is. Based on a true story (of course it is since that is the go to phrase in horror these days), The Possession boasts some very good acting performances, some genuinely chilling scenes (I dread my next X-RAY) and a good emotional pull as the Brenek family, already struggling to come to terms with the divorce of the elders, has to fight to keep the youngest daughter from total inhabitation by the demon Abizu. It also turns out to be deftly filmed, with creepy sound effects and muted colours aiding the atmosphere.

Is it fresh and exciting? A new dawn for the possessed child sub-genre of horror? No of course not. It's ripe with clichés and the film gets away from itself in the crucial last quarter. Yet it has a throwback quality and care of characters on the page that lifts it above stinker status. Crucially, also, is that it offers up a different spin on the Exorcism formula. The PG-13 and 15 certificates tell you it's not going to be gore strewn and horrifically pant soiling, and that turns out to be the case, but this is most definitely a good thing here and keeps the horror on a human character driven level.

Good but not great, but a decent night in if ultimately you wont remember much about it a month later. 6.5/10

By The Movie Guy TOP 500 REVIEWER on 20 May 2013
Format: DVD
The film opens with the "based on a true story" claim. It follows this claim with a man coming home to find his mom possessed by a demon. Yes, I remember mom being possessed by demons. I warned her about burning those black candles, drinking goat's blood, and opening strange ancient boxes with Hebrew letters.

After the credits, the story then moves on to Clyde (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), the almost big time basketball coach, his divorced wife Stephanie (Kyra Sedgwick), and two adorable daughters he has for the weekend in his new home on Always Dreary Lane. Em (Natasha Calis) the younger, more adorable, and better actor of his two daughters buys a box at a yard sale and the next thing you know the movie transforms itself into a mediocre Jewish exorcism film.

The highlight for me was the MRI scene. I would like to see Natasha Calis get smacked around er ah star in more horror films. You can keep the rest of that lot. I found myself getting bored during some of the better scenes. At 92 minutes, it seemed like 2 hours. Dialogue lacked decent hooks. Oh wait. That's because this was "based on a true story."

Parental Guide: No f-bombs, sex, or nudity. No moths were harmed in the filming of this movie.

By Debra F TOP 500 REVIEWER on 28 Nov. 2014
Format: DVD
As this is only a 15 rating, it will come as no suprise that this isn't the most graphic of horror films. In fact, it was really rather tame. Ten year old Em becomes over protective of a wooden box she found at a yard sale and her behaviour becomes more erratic as whatever was in the box slowly possesses her.
There wasn't enough detail & too many leaps in the story to make this a good film. Consequently, I found the atmosphere failed to develop as it should and I found myself watching it with a rather external critic eye as opposed to being part of the story. Em's mother agrees to a rather brutal exorcism by a strange Jew in a matter of seconds and never seems to question why her new found boyfriend disappears suddenly. The climax of the story should be the exorcism but I found it a bit tame and far too quick. The physical representation of the demon was good and so much more could have been done with this. When you compare this scene with classic films such as The Exorcist, it seems very bland.
This is a fairly basic horror film with little to lift it out of the banal and run of the mill. I suspect it was produced in a hurry to jump on the band wagon of other excellent horror films but it failed to make the grade.
