Ian Niall is a writer of some reputation, and over the years the illustrations for his books have often been provided by the great nature artist C. R. Tunnicliffe. Who better then to write the biography of a man whose extraordinary talent has never fully been recognised.

Tunnicliffe was a modest man and one who took on more work than he could easily do, for less than it was worth. His ability was apparent from an early age, and developed along a clear path through his life. If you are already an admirer of his work, you'll find this book a joy; it is crammed with high quality illustrations of every aspect of Tunnicliffe's work, from early etchings to the exquisite exhibition watercolours which display his natural feeling for design. If you are new to him, you will find your breath taken away.

For Tunnicliffe wasn't just especially talented at portraying living animals in a very lifelike way. Each drawing, each print, each painting, has a balance and harmony that remind one of Japanese prints. Even the working notes made rapidly in the open air have a superb poise.

Niall's biographer takes us through the artist's life, setting his work in its context. But Tunnicliffe was so thoroughly an artist that it is through the drawings and paintings that we get to know him.

My son gave me this book as a birthday present 55yrs ago ! Over the course of many years and several moves it went missing, so I decided to get a replacement...and did just that !
It is a beautifull book by a very fine English wild life artist, and well worth having, it will give hours of pleasure. I highly recommend it.

I love this book. A friend had a copy and I really wanted one for myself. There are wonderful illustrations and marvellous reproductions of wood engravings, watercolours and etchings. I value it and am thoroughly enjoying it.

Beautiful illustrations. Comprehensive visual biography of Tunnicliffe's life. A must for any lover of the British countryside and for the library of any etcher or scraperboard artist. His work is detailed and exquisite. This book is still being used as an inspiration in illustration courses even in Australia.
