About the Author
Adrian Streather is a well established author. This 996 book is his fourth where he writes about a specific 911 model. It is his sixth book overall. His passion and enthusiasm for all the 996 models knows no bounds. As a 996 owner himself he is well aware of the technical advances in all areas that were achieved by Porsche over their previous models.

The book has some very useful narrative text, but is let down by poor photos, cutaway diagrams and falls short of 'what good is'.
Many pictures are reproduced from Porsche's own material, but instead of making them bigger (so you can read them and get into the detail) they are reproduced at the same size and in B&W; pretty pointless when Porsche's originals were largely colour coded to differentiate parts of the car.
I had expected to be able to look at any part of my 996 and find a picture of it in the manual, but this is not the case. One example: I wanted to see what the underside of the car should look like front/middle/rear section and I can't; so how would I know if there was any damage or anything as wrong? The book is simply not technical enough and represents in platitudes.
Even better if... part by part exploded diagrams; tips on tool sizes; colour pictures and BIG blown up diagrams and cutaways so you can see what you're menat to be working with.
I expected more for my money; possibly even something I might enjoy reading!
Overall the book reads more like something that was copied from an internet forum, rather than an authoritative volume from somebody who had direct personal knowledge of the 996 (either through working on them or by having access to the factory).
It's also let down by lots of small black and white photographs, which have the feel of being included because they were available rather than because they illustrate a point.
I've now got almost 100 books on Porsches - this is one of the most disappointing.
Tells you everything you need to know, whether you are a prospective nervous first time buyer or an existing owner wishing to learn a little more.
Very informative, let down only by the lack of colour pictures, dispite giving refrences to pictures that were maybe intended to be published in colour.
On the whole though, a great book.
Enjoy and drive safely..
