I read this book when I was 12 when it first came out but lost my copy, then managed to find one again on "that" bid website and after lending it to everyone I knew who might appreciate it I lost that too. I was overjoyed to find it on kindle. A fantastic book with well told stories linking together that enables us to engage with the dramatic nature of the animal world by showing us the human side. A book you want to tell people about. That I searched for it 25 years after first reading it must say something about how memorable it is. It is certainly one of my personal classics

These are the most wonderful stories. Reminiscent of Wind in the Willows, Pork is a collection of short stories with animals as the protagonists. It doesn't pull its punches, there is a lot of violence here, but it's authentic, and the writing is beautiful.

This is a simply glorious collection of short and short-ish stories set in a magical woodland realm. In his own way, and not as if he's spoofing anything in particular, Chris Freddi sets up a series of perhaps realistic and frequently cynical stories about the animal inhabitants. The powerful anti-hero toad, Ug, is a great and cynical character, and in many tales, the animals reach a surprising and sticky end. Some are very touching, all are excellent. A very good read indeed.

It is a great shame that this author has hardly produced any fiction books since this release in the early 80's. Pork is an extraordinary book, with unforgettable characters placed in dark, frightening stories. The writing is excellent, really taking you inside the forest, seeing nature through the eyes of predators and prey. Although it's rather short, and relatively unknown, I rate it right up there with the best animal books such as Watership Down and Duncton Wood.
