Fun, bouncy and slightly emotional in segments, Neon Trees' third album is without a doubt my favourite.
Atypical of the indie rock style, the majority of the album is decorated in numerous colourful rocking tunes with addictive hooks and glimmering riffs - but whilst many indie acts fall short of the fence in making something both catchy and different, Neon Trees, whilst focusing very much on love as a theme, manage to make an intriguing album which is bound to become trapped in your head forever.
Highlights of the album are absolutely 'Sleeping with a Friend', 'I Love You (But I Hate Your Friends)', 'First Things First', 'Love in the 21st Century' and 'In Another World'. Whilst some tracks may not stick in your head as well as others, there's no denying I really enjoyed this album on the whole and seeing as I can still remember half the tunes after a month or two of purchasing the album, I'd say that's pretty good going.
This album is probably the most ridiculously catchy record ever released. From the opening track you think things can't continue to sound this big bouncy and polished but the album just keeps growing and growing with each song. Honestly this is so infectious it should come with a health warning. It wears its obvious 80's influences on its sleeve but still manages to sound fresh and contemporary. No scratch that, this is ahead of its time. Years from now people will look back at this album and wonder why Neon Trees were not the biggest band in the world. The first two albums were more of indie pop rock vibe where as this is as pure pop as you can get but if you're a fan of the earlier albums don't let that put you off. This is still absolutely the Neon Trees you know and love and they really seem to have nailed their own unique sound here. Tyler Glenn's voice and songwriting are better than ever. Animal was the big hit from Habits and Everybody Talks from Picture Show. Literally every song on this album sounds like a potential hit single. Whether you are an existing fan or new to the band, buy this album you will not regret it. While you're at if you don't already have it buy their back catalogue too. Surely someday soon Neon Trees are gonna conquer the music world as they deserve. Perfect pop at its absolute finest.
