Product Description

From the Back Cover

Polly Hardcastle lives in Barton upon Humber with her sister Laura, and Laura's overbearing and often violent husband, Sean.
She leaves school at the end of 1935 and takes a job working for Sir Giles Beauchamp and his wife as a nursery maid. Polly is happy there except for the Nanny, Jane, who takes an instant dislike to her.
Laura has her own problems with her bullying husband and needs all her strength to overcome the shocks and trauma destined for her future.
Martin and Christopher Beauchamp, elder sons of Sir Giles, join the Army and RAF respectively and when the war begins Polly's friendship with Christopher strengthens. The difference in their backgrounds means heartache for Polly, but she refuses to give up on their love.

"Wake up you idle eejit and get some work done around here." Polly's awakening was abrupt as she felt someone shaking her roughly. She opened her eyes to find her brother-in-law pushing his unshaven face close to hers. She recoiled from the stench of his breath, and pulled the threadbare blanket up instinctively under her chin. She responded with as much hatred as she could throw into her sleepy voice.
"Get your filthy face out of mine, Sean O'Connell and leave me alone," she kept her voice low to emphasise every word. He drew back his hand to slap her but she was too quick for him and scrambled past him to stand in the middle of the kitchen with her hands on her hips, her thin nightgown offering little protection against the cold morning.....

I downloaded this book when it was free because of the number of good reviews it had already received and I'm very pleased that I gave it a try.

I agree with a previous reviewer who compared the style of the book with that of Mary Jane Staples: it also reminded me of Catherine Cookson's style as well, i.e. a well-written, light, family-saga, compulsive type of a book. The characters aren't written about with any great depth, but are enough to make the reader care about them and their lives.

The reader is introduced to Polly and Laura at a difficult time in their lives and then sees them grow and adjust to their situation in life - and the outcome of events, mostly, isn't too predictable.

Some of the action takes place during the years of the second world war and a number of events are described through the lives of the main characters. This is well done and the reader becomes involved in the sometimes exciting or emotional events. I couldn't put my kindle down at these times and was compelled to read on until the end of these chapters, so that I knew for sure how those involved finally fared.

This is my first experience of this author, but I will look out for other titles by them in future and have already recommended this book to other members of my family.

If you are looking for a well-written (with very, very few typos), easy-reading, heartwarming, family story, then this book will fit the bill admirably.

I have a passion for books set in this era and this book did not disappoint. This is the first time I have read a book by this author and I look forward to reading another. A good story line which, in my opinion, was not predictable.

The story of the life of Polly and how she survived through WW11. I connected with this story because of where it was set. I live over the water in Hull but have spent time in Lincolnshire. The 2 sisters survived the death of their parents and the terrible time Sean (Laura's Husband) gave them. Loved the book and highly recommend it. Downloaded the sequel and will be reading it shortly.
