About the Author

Eleanor Porter (Author)
Eleanor Emily Hodgman Porter was an American novelist. She was born in 1868 in Littleton, New Hampshire. She was trained as a singer, attending the New England Conservatory for several years. In 1892 she married John Lyman Porter and moved to Massachusetts, after which she began writing and publishing her short stories and, later, novels. She died in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1920, and was buried at Mount Auburn Cemetery.

Neil Reed (Illustrator)
Neil Reed has been an illustrator for more than twenty years and has illustrated novels such as Goodnight, Mr Tom and What Katy Did. As well as illustrating, Neil enjoys landscape design and painting. He currently lives in Cornwall.

Pollyanna is a really excellent book. It begins when this appealing young girl comes to live at her Aunt Polly's house. Aunt Polly is only taking her because it is her duty - she doesn't really want a lively 11 year old. Although the house is full of empty, well-furnished rooms, Aunt Polly gives Pollyanna a bleak attic as a bedroom. But Pollyanna has been taught by her father (who has died) to find something to be glad about in everything - the "glad game"! Every time Aunt Polly tries to punish her, Pollyanna regards it as a special treat! Soon the whole town knows this joyful little girl. Read about how she visits a cantankerous invalid and changes her - About how she makes friends with a recluse who won't speak to anyone - how she helps a young orphan boy to find a home - how she encourages her discouraged local minister! In the end she even changes her Aunt Polly - and helps to reunite her with the man who loves her! There are lots of great episodes in the book - and funny ones too! But then Pollyanna has an awful accident. Will she be paralysed for life? How can she be glad then?

Having been called Pollyanna often in the last couple of years when I saw it available so cheaply for the kindle I just had to get it.

All I can say is I'm so GLAD I did!!! What an absolutely delightful story. I'm a pretty positive person so I can see why this story has come to my attention, but the little girl in this book just comes alive through the pages. You can picture her bounding around full of energy and appreciation for life.

Reading it truly does make you aware of how much we all have to appreciate in life and in all honesty, I never wanted this book to end! Just lovely!

I'd never read this book as a child but it's recently been on my 'list' after a few references to it in various publications. I couldn't put it down from the moment I started reading it on my Kindle! Absolutely loved it. I was completely absorbed in Eleanor's description of the characters and Polyanna's surroundings and er eternal optimism. It made me cry, it made me ponder, and it truly lifted my spirits. I love the idea of the 'glad' game - it's certainly made me look at things from a different perspective. I recommend that you read it and then read Pollyanna Grows Up, because you just don't want to come to the end of the story!

Her sunny disposition and determination to continue the game her father taught her makes for excellent reading. Her innocent reaction to the people she meets and the help and strength that she gives them makes for a good thought provoking story. If you do not know the story, then please read it and pass it on to any young folk you are interested in. We all need to join Pollyanna in her 'Glad' game.

Great book! I love it! The little girl is so glad about everything. Pollyanna is a good example of being kind to everybody even if they aren't kind to you. We have enjoyed mummy reading it aloud to me (age 7) and my brother (age 9) especially with the old fashioned language which has lots of expression. The characters are quite different to ones in many other children's books, and we found them very interesting. We begged mummy to read it each night. I would recommend it to everybody!
