After an excellent brief introduction there are chapters on Ancient Political Thought(800BCE - 30CE); Medieval politics(30CE - 1515CE); Rationality and Enlightenment(1515 - 1770); Revolutionary Thoughts(1770 - 1848); The Rise of the Masses(1848 - 1910); The Clash of Ideologies(1910 - 1945) & Post-War politics(1945 - Present).
The book concludes with a Directory giving brief outlines of 37 political thinkers not covered in the main text and a Glossary of political terms.
'The Politics Book' is a beautifully illustrated, jargon-free guide to an important subject which should appeal to the general reader as well as students of politics.
The author has made what to most people is a boring subject interesting and informative.
The Politics Book is an absolute gem, and having purchased most of the series' precedented titles (The Psychology Book and The Economics Book), I knew I was in for a treat. In spite of fitting into the 'avid student' category with a passion and understanding of politics and its workings, the book opened up many new ideas and provoked many new thoughts, as well as offering provocative perspectives on issues that I'd previously remained staunch on.
What's more the attractive visuals and simple explanations made it both pleasing to the eye and the mind itself. This is an excellent reference guide and is very engaging to read, whether you're a beginner in the world of politics or a savvy know-it-all: there is something to be found for everyone.
If you own any other titles in the series, you will have already experienced the magnificent presentation style of the book (this title also goes very well with The Economics Book); be aware that you are to gain even more and may even find that politics isn't as dreary as you had first anticipated.
Five stars all the way, because I found nothing to criticise and kudos to DK for being on top form as ever!
