As a Whitehall civil servant I found this book to be of great interest. It's content is very relevant, although it may not all be relevant to your role in the service. This book would also be of interest to anyone wanting to find out what a civil servant really does. If you're a current or prospective civil servant this book really is a must. Couple it with How Parliament Works, you've got yourself a good little pack.

I used to work for Martin and enjoyed doing so. Inevitably my first act on receiving it was to turn to the index to see whether I or anyone I knew or any incidents of which I was aware appeared in the text. None of them did because the book was exactly as the title described - a guide to the issues of which an aspiring official should be aware and sensible advice how to address them. Anyone rising, or with plans to rise, through Central Government would be well advised to read it. Sadly, from my personal perspective, there are no 'inside stories' or indiscretions. I have recommended the chapter on the EU to someone I know who is about to start work on an EU-funded project as providing useful background.
