Product Description

Review

'The great merit of Andrew Heywood's book is that he takes ideology seriously, and explores patiently and with admirable clarity the different characteristics of the classic western ideologies, as well as the new themes and directions of recent ideological thought. He has produced one of the best available introductions to the subject anywhere in print.' - Professor Andrew Gamble, University of Cambridge, UK

Once again, Heywood has managed to contain within this book the essential and most relevant definitions, arguments and theories. The new edition has really made clear distinctions, and of course links between ideologies that have sometimes been less clear through coloured points and other useful diagrams. It has become a more excellent reference book for university students, as well as becoming a good and informative read for those with a genuine interest in the key areas of political ideology. It is well-written and accessible which is why it remains my key reference book in my studies on Political Ideologies. Kudos to Andrew Heywood!

Excellent organisation, great explanation and descriptions. Strips the various ideologies down, helps you understand the roots of their origins and how many of them overlap. As someone who already considered themselves well-read in the subject, I've found this book a tremendous benefit to my understanding of political ideology. It thoroughly deserves its 5 star product rating.

I was told to get this textbook as a part of my A2 Politics course, in comparison to other textbooks I've had in the past this is a really great one. It's compact enough to carry every day without being weighted down, and inside the information is laid out really clearly. The chapters being broken down into more concise topics and then definitions of new terms laid out on the side.

Even if you haven't been told to get this book for your course I would definitely recommend it as it's one of the clearest and best laid out textbooks for ideologies around.

I found this as a very good start point for those who want to understand exactly what it means when politicians or commentators etc. refer to people or policies as Marxist etc.
It also helps to illustrate that in this life there are very few examples of following the pure theories expressed, all are "a piece of this, with a bit of that and some of the other" to suit the personal objectives of the government of the day.

Was given this by my A-level teacher, and I found it most useful for my A2 Edexcel Government and Politics examination! This really provides me with sufficient examples and analysis for the long essay questions. As Heywood states himself in one of his seminars, there are no chance for new essay questions to be created. For instance, in nationalism, there are only truly THREE essay questions: forward/backward looking, peace/conflict, or single doctrine or not.

The book consists of all of the essay points and essay topics, and if you have the mark schemes of the essays with you, you will find that Heywood's book elaborates all of the points on the mark scheme. One exemplar essay by a student was given full marks, and he/she clearly route learnt one of his passages. Not suggesting you to do so though.

NON-EXAM READERS;
It is interesting in itself to learn about ideologies, and this book makes it simple and easy as everything inside is clear and pretty straight-forwards. However, this book is in a way designed for A-level students, as it does go far enough. The Oxford Political Ideologies book, though a lot more expensive, is more complex and in-depth, and worth buying if you're studying politics in UNIVERSITY.

This is an engrossing, intellectually stimulating and comprehensive guide to political ideologies.
After an illuminating introduction there are 10 chapters on Liberalism; Conservatism; Socialism; Anarchism; Nationalism; Fascism; Feminism; Ecologism; Religious Fundamentalism & Multiculturalism. Each chapter contains boxed material giving information on major thinkers and key concepts and concludes with a further reading list. The final chapter discusses whether we are living in a post-ideological age.
This thoroughly revised and updated 5th edition(2012) is a coherent and jargon-free guide to political ideologies which is ideal for the student as well as the general reader wishing to make sense of our complex political world.
