'The great merit of Andrew Heywood's book is that he takes ideology seriously, and explores patiently and with admirable clarity the different characteristics of the classic western ideologies, as well as the new themes and directions of recent ideological thought. He has produced one of the best available introductions to the subject anywhere in print.' - Professor Andrew Gamble, University of Cambridge, UK
Thoroughly revised and updated, this bestselling text provides a clear and accessible introduction to the political creeds and doctrines that have dominated and shaped world politics

Even if you haven't been told to get this book for your course I would definitely recommend it as it's one of the clearest and best laid out textbooks for ideologies around.
It also helps to illustrate that in this life there are very few examples of following the pure theories expressed, all are "a piece of this, with a bit of that and some of the other" to suit the personal objectives of the government of the day.
The book consists of all of the essay points and essay topics, and if you have the mark schemes of the essays with you, you will find that Heywood's book elaborates all of the points on the mark scheme. One exemplar essay by a student was given full marks, and he/she clearly route learnt one of his passages. Not suggesting you to do so though.
It is interesting in itself to learn about ideologies, and this book makes it simple and easy as everything inside is clear and pretty straight-forwards. However, this book is in a way designed for A-level students, as it does go far enough. The Oxford Political Ideologies book, though a lot more expensive, is more complex and in-depth, and worth buying if you're studying politics in UNIVERSITY.
After an illuminating introduction there are 10 chapters on Liberalism; Conservatism; Socialism; Anarchism; Nationalism; Fascism; Feminism; Ecologism; Religious Fundamentalism & Multiculturalism. Each chapter contains boxed material giving information on major thinkers and key concepts and concludes with a further reading list. The final chapter discusses whether we are living in a post-ideological age.
This thoroughly revised and updated 5th edition(2012) is a coherent and jargon-free guide to political ideologies which is ideal for the student as well as the general reader wishing to make sense of our complex political world.
It is indepth and very well sourced and background required for each ideology is well done.
It is easy to read and also actually quite interesting in its approach.
Even if you are not studying the subject, I reccomend this book to all because it is very informative and interesting.
