On the back of a great debut album and having enjoyed seeing them play an oustanding set in London a couple of years ago, I looked forward to the next offering with baited breath.
Unfortunately it seems that I should have held my breath a bit longer, this has got to rate as one of the most disappointing 2nd albums I've ever had the displeasure to buy. From a raw unique sound with some innovative sounds and great attitude on their first album, I find myself worrying if anyone can hear what's now playing on my headphones.
The first tune on this album that sounds anything like those that whet my whistle in the first place is track 8 'Never in all my days' but this is the first time that work has been so boring that I've managed to get this far on the album. Hey, maybe the album grows on you, maybe I'm being too harsh...nah, I've just hit track 9 and I think I can hear Eric Clapton in his non 'Cream' days, sigh!

I guess i'm lucky to have heard this bands records in the order they were released. This being their 3rd album, they've permanently brought in Duwayne Burnside (son of the legendary R.L.) and the record has a much fuller sound for it. They've taken a combination of the first 2 albums and added a more commercially viable sound to the songs, but unlike a lot of bands who do this, this record has come out sounding magic and not doing the band no harm at all in my opinion.
They've retained the blues feel in there but i know some fans i've spoken to are not happy with the fact that they're not jamming so much anymore, the songs are shorter, sharper and more to the point (I've no doubt they'll extend "live" if they get the urge).
Songs like "Eyes", "Bad bad pain" and "Never in all my days" will have you singing to yourself for days on end and "Meet me in the city" is a very worthy, creditable cover. "Daze like these" and "Otay" show a newer side to their writing, they have a poppy sound, a negative for me initially but they keep you coming back for more each time.
The fact that Noel Gallagher provided vocals for the title track and "One to grow on" didn't really have much effect for myself but this would be the record to start with if you're an Oasis type fan, if you want more full-on blues, i'd recommend "Shake hands with shorty" first.
It's true, when this band peak it will be very frightening, i only hope they live up to expectations and get what they deserve. I'm delighted with the purchase of this album and recommend it to anyone out there with a wide taste for blues/rock/pop.

On the surface this should have been a corking album. From a band who have made two of the ninties most original blues albums. Helping a generation rediscover the likes of Junior Kimbrough and R. L. Burnside. All the ingredients appeared to be right, indeed no fewer than 3 members of R. L. Burnside's HUGE musical family appear on this album. However maybe the first warning sign should have been the appearence of our very own Noel Gallagher.
This album is not just bad, its worse than that. Polaris is so, so very BLAND. Polaris is as twee as window boxes and hanging baskes. It has all the edge of soggy cardboard and represents the worst side of commercial mainstream rubbish. The only good thing about this album is that the CD its self makes a good coaster. But don't listen too it and crtainly DO NOT buy it.
