From the manufacturer
More Than Just GPS
Polar M400 combines style, performance and comfort. It's a blend of sporty design, integrated GPS, activity tracking and training features.
Designed for Life
Lightweight and compact, M400 is made to be worn all day. Get guidance throughout your training, monitor your activity and get alerts when it's time to get up and move.
Powered by GPS
M400 gives you the freedom to explore new, more adventurous routes: you can measure your pace, distance and altitude and find your way back home.
- High-resolution and high-contrast display, ideal for outdoor training
- Accurate heart rate (requires H7 heart rate sensor)
- Water-resistant to 100 ft
- 24/7 activity tracking
- Integrated GPS
- Training targets
- Finish time estimator
- Set targets to beat your personal best
- Customised sport profiles
When you pair your M400 with the H7 heart rate sensor, you'll always know when you're within your target heart rate zone and training at the right intensity (Requires H7 heart rate sensor).
Track your speed, distance and altitude with the built-in GPS. M400 also keeps tabs on your personal bests and lets you know when you've set a new record.
On top of your regular training days, getting enough daily activity is an important part of keeping fit. M400 tracks your steps, calories and sleep time and notifies you when you are inactive for long periods of time. It also gives you a daily activity goal and tips to reach it.
Improve your run and more. M400 counts your running index score automatically after every run based on your heart rate and the speed data collected by the built-in GPS (Requires H7 heart rate sensor).
Add heart rate to your workout with the H7 sensor
The triple-action H7 heart rate sensor provides your real-time heart rate to mobile training apps, many Polar products and compatible gym equipment. H7 heart rate sensor (black M-XXL) is included in the M400 with heart rate product set.
Polar Flow Mobile App and Web Service
When you use M400 together with the Polar Flow web service and app, you get all the tools, stats and support you need to step up your game. Challenge yourself with new goals, go over your training sessions and learn more about your active lifestyle.

The android app is also slow and buggy and although it appears to sync OK it loses recordings - presumably some other poor polar m400 user has received my missing workouts. It only sometimes notes the use of the heart-rate monitor, despite the watch showing them.
So the web site and app receive only one star - mainly because zero-stars are not acceptable to amazon.
The watch and chest-strap are a different matter. Although some things - such as a simple stopwatch - are absent this is kind-of unnecessary as you tend to record your whole sessions, not just the time.
The watch is easy to use and the display is surprisingly clear even in low-light conditions, but it has a backlight too just in case.
The watchstrap is very sticky rubber, which tends to stick to clothes, but it is comfortable and the whole thing is surprisingly light and, whilst not too slim, is just about OK to fit under a shirt cuff.
The chest-strap was easy to pair up, set up and use. Once in use you tend not to notice it (if you adjust it correctly).
The best part of the watch is the setting of daily goals, which are a combination of steps and overall energy expended (so a fast walk counts for more than a slow walk, etc.).
For me, this is significantly better than a so-called "smart-watch" since they seem too gimmicky, but Polar really need to sort out their awful web site and app.
EDIT: It is now nearly three weeks since I contacted Polar to try to resolve the issues I have experienced but they have still not responded yet.
The Polar Flow software is fantastic, not only does it log all of your workouts (Calories burned, distanced covered, speed, heart rate, pace etc), the GPS overlays them onto a map for you, for better analysis, breaking the sessions into even more detail. You can see exactly where your fastest mile was, at what point your heart was working at its hardest etc. There are also tools that will tell you exactly how long you have spent in each heart rate zone either in any individual training session, or on average throughout all of your sessions.
Finally the diary records all your activity and training sessions, allowing you to go back to earlier sessions and compare them with your latest workouts, so you can gauge any improvements in your fitness. You can even use the diary to download a video break down, which uses google maps, and google street view to relive each session, and share them with friends via social media if you are so inclined.
There is one poor design flaw with the watch, the USB port which is used to both charge the watch and sync your date with the Polar Flow software, is located directly on the base of the watch. The problem with this is that sweat builds up in this port (Which is fully water proof) during training, and the salt in your sweat rusts the circuits, eventually rendering the watch useless. Other reviewers have reported this happening within as little as two weeks!
However Polar recommend rinsing out the USB port with clean water after every session (again it is fully waterproof), and allowing to air dry completely. Doing this every day I have had no problems with my watch (And I sweat profusely during training!). A good tip I have found is to roll a piece of toilet or tissue paper into a tapered point and dab this into the USB port after each cleaning. The tissue will wick away any water or built up moisture in the port almost immediately leaving it dry and ready to use again.
