1.0 out of 5 stars Polish History Text a Major Disappointment 14 Oct. 2014
By Timothy Deal - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
This is a poorly written, poorly edited, and generally disappointing book, which I would not recommend to anyone. The author dutifully covers the main themes of modern Polish history, but does so with little grace or style. The individual chapters are disorganized and repetitious. Surprisingly, there are countless incomplete sentences throughout the text, something which a good editor would have caught. The choppy sentence structure makes for awkward reading. One wonders if those who gave such glowing tributes to the book and author on the back of the book ever read it -- or even looked at it. A major editing job is in order if there is ever to be a second edition.

1.0 out of 5 stars The author repeats communist era propaganda that the 1931 Polish Census was fixed without statistical evidence. 27 Nov. 2015
By White Eagle - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Despite having a Polish sounding surname, the author repeats communist era propaganda that the 1931 Polish Census was fixed to under-count ethnic minorities: "It is now believed that the Polish government forged returns relating to the Eastern borderlands..." (pg. 102) No doubt that there are anti-Polonist Pole bashers who want to believe such things. However, no statistical evidence has ever been produced to substantiate the claim. The number of Jews (by religion) increased as a percentage of the population from the previous census. Furthermore, the 1931 census enumerated native language and religion, not ethnicity. Therefore, the allegation is absurd. A nation cannot falsify census returns about a question that it did not ask. The claim rests on an alleged confession by the head of Poland's prewar statistical office made during Soviet occupation of Poland while his brother was incarcerated for some "crime" against the state, and only published after his death by Polish Communist Party historian Jerzy Tomaszewski. In fact, in comparison to other contemporary census, the Poles enumerated more categories nationally. The author works as an academic in the U.K., and it may be convenient for people there to believe that the Poles altered census returns to avoid the guilt of the Western betrayal of the Poles, and the people in what was Eastern Poland who did not want to join the Soviet Union. However, historical writing should focus on facts, and not what people want to believe. (Kate Brown's "A Biography Of No Place" is recommended for those interested in the cultural, ethnic, linguistic and religious diversity of this region.) It is difficult to believe that rumours of fixing another nation's census would be repeated like this without actual statistical evidence considering the social trauma of the war. Yet, this author repeats the communist gossip. There are much better books than what this author is selling.
