I was really impressed with its originality as i have never read anything like it before.
This story is set in Louisiana, young girl Evie is crazy, well everyone thinks she is and she is starting to believe it herself. For years Evie has had visions of an apolocolyptic future. Her mother sent her away to an institution and she has just come out and is starting a new school year. The school has some new pupils this year and Jackson is one of those new pupils. He is of Cajun origin and Evie and her friends look down on him because they are wealthy and he is not. One day there is a gigantic flash and strange lights appear in the aky and most of the worlds population are turned to ash. Evie survived because she is well one of the Arcana. To explain briefly. Every few centuries a game begins. Children are competed against each other to the death, and the one left standing essentially becomes immortal until the next cycle starts.
Each child that competes represents a card from the Tarot pack. There are 78 cards in a Tarot deck, but there are 22 Arcana cards, those cards hold all the power. Evie is an Arcana, after the flash she discovers she has a talent for controlling plant life. We meet 4 other cards in this 1st book, The Fool, The Magician, The Moon and The Hermit. We are also sort of introduced to Death, but we dont meet him. Death as the current reigning champion of the game can speak to all of the other Major Arcana in their minds.
When one of the Arcana kills another, the symbol from the fallen appears as a permanent tattoo on the victors skin. The more they collect the more powerful they become, but to defeat Death they have to kill the other kids, gain their powers and kill Death before he kills them.
This is a book of 2 halves really, you have the beginning where the start of a friendship occurs between 2 people from opposite sides of the tracks, and then after the flash where something completely different happens.
I enjoyed it, i turned the final page and immediately bought the other 4 books in the series.
Brilliant, bold, interesting, and completely original.
Know what to make of a YA book as some I`ve read are a little twee. This book just explodes with the characters vying for centre stage. I love tarot so basing each of the characters on a card is a wicked idea, playing them off one another gives another level but I want to see what happens with Jack and Evie, born where he was he really should have a broader mind.
Recommend this book.....you betcha for adults and teens alike.
I liked the whole will they/wont they thing between Evie and Jackson but at the same time it drove me mad with the continuous misunderstandings and stuff between them. Why couldn't they just explain themselves better?!
What I wasn't particularly a fan of was the tarot card thing. I'll admit it grew on me throughout and at the end I'd gotten used to it and was more into the concept but at the start I had no idea what was happening and sort of skated over the dreams and such.
After the ending I will admit to be very intrigued with how the rest of the series will play out so I will be reading the second book soon.
