"I have always wanted to the hands of the people to be seen in poetry". (Pablo Neruda). If ever I had to acknowledge a profound influence on my development as a poet it was Pablo Neruda. As a sixteen year old who burned to write my influences were of the early seventies Lorca, Ginsberg, and Kerouac. The imagery of Lorca in particular, all silver moons, knife blades and held kissed lips suited the gypsy of my soul. But it was the discovery of Pablo Neruda that sent my heart and blood soaring with the power of what words could do. "Twenty Love Poems and a Poem of Despair"- a slim volume with "Body of Woman". "Body of skin, of moss, of avid, steady milk. Ah the goblets of the breasts! Ah the eyes of absence! Ah the rose of the pubis! Ah your voice slow and sad!" And I was hooked, sunk, lined and set about finding as much of Mr Neruda's work as I could. "La Palabra"- "The word was born in the blood, grew in the dark body, beating, and flew through the lips and the mouth." Sums up his rich wine of writing. Chile: Salvadore Allende's murder and the subsequent death of Pablo Neruda in 1973 shook my part in the world. When I deeply came to understand that it was not enough to ask for or work for justice, it like human beings, was easily crushed. This is a good volume. There are some bi-lingual poems and it is good to read the original in Spanish as Pablo Neruda wrote to read and communicate. If you have a bit of Spanish it helps but not understanding is ok if you can get a sense of the richness of the words and language. A collossus of a poet and a good selection of his verse.

This has a vast amount of his work. The book is quick thick and has his writing in both Spanish and English. In either language the words create a nice rhythm. Not only is this a must for Neruda fans but for anyone looking to have a great time reading amazing poetry.

If you love Pablo Neruda or are a fan of amazing, passionate poetry, you'll love this book. It gets 4 stars because some of my favorites are not in this book. This book includes both the original Spanish poems as well as the English translations for each.

A great collection of poems by him -- I haven't gone through the entire book yet but the poetry by Neruda is otherworldly.
