Forget the synopsis- this is a very clever, well written book of verse that explores attitudes to violence, sex, drink, friendship and the changes of age. Very funny, wonderfully irreverent and at times verging on the blasphemous.

There can be few books of poetry that I have picked at random that I have not enjoyed more. "Poetry my Arse" contains some amusing poems that lighten the whole wet Dublin-like experience. The imagery conjured though sometimes stark is softened by the watery edges of the authors native city, and perhaps the small drinking houses described still exist.

HASH(0x9e86d51c) out of 5 stars excellent 23 Aug. 2000
By Dan Conlon - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I've read a lot of Brendan Kennelly's books and Poetry My Arse is not my favorite (The Book of Judas is) but it's still an excellent collection of poetry. I read the book last year but there is still this one poem from the collection that sticks with me for some reason. It goes something like:
Climbing Folklore Hill one sunny morning/ Ace was nearly happy/ Then a shadow darkened a green railing/ And he thought of someone he'd love to kill.
Those aren't the right line breaks, but there it is. It's stuff like that that blows the top of my head off.
