I don't often read poetry collections but picked this up as I really fancied a change. I read it in one sitting and really enjoyed it. Poems about life, love, motherhood and mental health are all things I can relate to and most of them also made me smile. I felt really quite peaceful and chilled out reading this.

I was invited to join the ARC/beta reader group for Poetry of The Heart and Soul.
These are my true and unbiased thoughts:
I thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful collection of poetry - personal to the author in many ways and shared in a thoughtful, generous way.
There are considerate touches in this collection - the asterisked explanations of some of the poems enabling the reader to get a deeper insight into the author's thought processes whilst writing Heart and Soul. For instance, in Fears, she explains that the poem was written at a time when she was fed up of giving life to her fears.
There are three lined poems like Minor Key, touching upon the subject of melancholy and Fly which manages to be magical in its brevity. Longer story type poems grace this collection too - such as Lost.
I loved all the poems but especially:
Falling (inspired by a visual cue)
Blue (which was originally a lyrical piece to put to music)
Cease and Desist - that made me smile - our British obsession with the weather!
Reach Out (suicide prevention)
Imagination
Everybody
Presently (about holding back the years
More than Once (on the subject of life and marriage.)
My Kind of Romance
A Mother's Love
My recommendation: 5 stars. Highly recommended for all poetry enthusiasts.

I never used to read much poetry, it wasn't really my cup of tea. Until I met Sarah Northwood and discovered that poetry can reach inside you, to those emotions you keep hidden away, and touch your soul.
Her poems are thoughtful musings on everyday life, things that affect you but you can't find the words to describe. They're about family, security, and love, but also about feeling anger, hurt, and frustration. Reading her poems is like having a friend nearby who understands, listens, and puts their arms around you to console you.
Many of the poems are accompanied by a short explanation from the author, giving you an insight into the meaning behind her words, which I love, and there are gorgeous illustrations by the author throughout the book. This book of poetry is something to treasure, and read on days you need a quiet five minutes to yourself away from chaos of the world around you.

I liked a lot of the poems in this book and the little author notes which accompanied most did add to the reading enjoyment. If you like everything to rhyme then this may not be for you but if you like to immerse yourself in poems where you feel touched and some kind of connection then you will enjoy these. I certainly found some here that I will be happy to come back to.

Her heart and soul is literally spread across every page, she has laid herself bare and you really feel every emotion. Her words make you feel brave. There are so many lessons from each and every word, something to lift and inspire or just to always remind you. A great book filled with touching and relatable poetry that will warm and comfort you.
