One thing i would say however is that I cannot fault the customer service. They replaced my first case for me without question, and after my second case fell to pieces they also provided me with a full refund within hours of me sending the complaint. Fantastic sellers, making it all the more unfortunate that their products are not quite as sturdy.
If you do not want to read the whole review the bottom line is that older versions of this case start splitting at the seams where the grey rubber meets the black plastic. However, Poetic have been continuously developing and improving the cases and now claim to have solved the issues in the "Final Fixed version". This went on sale the week starting 25 February so it is early to tell just yet if the problem was resolved. Keep an eye on recent reviews and my updates at the bottom of this review. Poetic will however fulfill their warranty obligations and issue you with a replacement if you contact their customer services. In most cases (I have not heard of one) they will not require that the faulty case is sent back to them.
ORIGINAL REVIEW.
I knew about this case before it went on sale in the US and was eagerly waiting for it to become available in the UK. I was looking for an alternative for the official Google bumper case which has been sold out on UK play store since November and to me £16 + postage is a bit too much. I pre-ordered immediately after it appeared on Amazon UK. Poetic always do a promotional price for their new product. I already bought a case for my Nexus 7 from them.
At the time of my order it said that it will start shipping on 30 December. It was a late Xmas surprise when my case arrived on early on 28 December. I started using it straightaway and loved it immediately. Fits perfectly, does not impede interaction with the screen. Of course, it does not provide the "full body" protection, but if that is what you want get a full body case, or at least a film screen protector to but on the Gorilla glass to prevent scratches. I don't like the extra layer on my touch screen and I am reasonably careful with my phone therefore this case is ideal. The grey rubber on the rims provides good grip and prevents the phone from sliding on inclined surface (up to a a certain degree only). It does not add bulk to the phone but lift the glass from the surface. The button work well, headphone and battery plugs are perfectly accessible (tried at least 3 different chargers) and mic openings are where they should be.
Then, after about two weeks of use I noticed that the grey rubber started peeling off the black plastic in the corner above the power button. I went on Amazon to find Poetic UK's CS contact details and noticed picture review from another buyer having the same issue. Went on Amazon US, where the case started selling earlier and there are tens of reviews with people complaining about the same issue. The case starts to disintegrate after few weeks, especially if you carry your phone in your trouser pockets.
However, having previous experience with Poetic I knew that once it will become apparent that this issue affects many cases they will issue an improved version and offer free replacement for those who have bought the faulty one. Plus I was covered by Poetic's 3 year warranty which covers workmanship and material.
By coincidence I received an email from Poetic on 12 Jan asking me to give feedback on the case and write a review of my purchase. I responded with my issue and provided pictures showing the splitting rubber.
The next day I got a following response:
________
Dear Buyer,
Thank you for your feedback. We are actually aware of this defect for
the bumper case and now have updated case we can send out to you free

Alex from Poetic
_______________
I agreed to get a new case, providing they guaranteed this was indeed a new, improved version of the case.
Again the Customer Service Rep responded in few hours:
________
Dear Buyer,
All of our borderline nexus 4 cases have been shipping the updated
versions since January 10th, including the UK. Your case should be
from the new batch. If it has shown otherwise, please let us know.

I really have to give credit to them here for their effort. Let me remind you that I had similar experience with the case for my Nexus 7 Poetic Slimline Portfolio Case for Google Nexus 7 Android Tablet by Asus Black(Automatically Wakes and Puts the Nexus 7 to Sleep)(3 Year Manufacturer Warranty From Poetic)(Final Version: With Secure Magnetic Closure, Cover Able to Fully Fold Back withou... , where they issued three iterations of the case and send all those who bought the flawed ones the new version for free, even without contacting their customer service.
Of course customers expect a flawless product everytime especially if they pay a premium price for a brand product, but again these manufacturers have a short time window to develop and market their products and it takes time, and sometimes trial and error, to achieve perfection. What I value about this company is that they listen to customer feedback and will go great lengths to ensure their satisfaction.
Therefore my advice, if your case begins to disintegrate, especially if you ordered your before 10 January '13 don't dismiss Poetic and their products but contact their customer services or send them a message via Amazon and ask for a new case.
I got my new case today. I will wait for few weeks to see what happens. If the problem returns I will update this review.
* UPDATE AFTER 3 WEEKS:
My replacement case does not show any signs of falling apart yet. The first one started splitting just after a week so three weeks is quite encouraging. Seems like Poetic used a stronger glue on their new batch.
* UPDATE AFTER 1 MONTH
Still going strong. No issues so far. I'd be interested to hear if anyone who ordered their case after 10 January had a faulty one.
* UPDATE AFTER MONTH AND 1 DAY - not so good news.
Had to take off the case to take out my SIM. As I was putting it back the rubber part covering the power button separated from the plastic. My first lasted 10 days the second just over a month. I really like this case and Poetic but right now I am disappointed. I'll keep it on 3 stars since they have the best customer service I have come across.
* They offered me yet another replacement free of charge. How much longer can this go on?
* UPDATE 27/02/13
I received my second replacement today and I've put it on straightaway. I am not sure whether my new case is from the very last batch which Poetic say is the "Final Fixed Version". I really like the new coloured cases. I guess I will get one if I am confident that it will last. So I now have 3 cases for the price of one, though two faulty ones. I glued those cases where they were splitting and they are still fit for purpose.
In the meantime I thought I'd give the Shenit Bumper Case for Google Nexus 4 TPU Cover LG E960 Protector - White/Silver a try. This looks like a very decent replica of the "official" Nexus bumper. I have only seen the official case on pictures so I cannot compare the quality, but it looks identical. However, I still like the Borderline better when it works. It's much better fit. The Shenit actually feels bit bulkier, adds more width to the phone than the Borderline by Poetic. My Shenit was also a bit loose on the volume rocker side and the volume rocker itself appeared bit retracted inside the case and did not have such a nice clicky feel as the power button on the other side of the case. Also the Borderline perfectly covers the phone's chrome edges. The Shenit replica covers the chrome on the sides but the chrome on the top and the bottom phone is visible and to me that does not look very nice. I'll try to upload some photos for comparison later.
* UPDATE 27/03/13
It's been a month since I got my second replacement. So far it's doing fine. No signs of splitting.
* UPDATE 28/03/13
Another month gone and the bumper is still as new. Also I take it off now and then when connecting my N4 to external loudspeaker. The extra tension of pulling it off and then back on does not appear to cause any difficulty to the seams where the older versions began to split after some time. My conclusion is that the earlier troubles are now gone. Will it last three years though? I don't think my phone will last me that long. (Bring on the X phone).
I have been useing this bumper now for four weeks and there are no signs of splitting as reported in many earlier reviews. Although I ordered at the end of December it looks like I may well have version II.
It eventually arrived on the 15th January, stuff ordered through Amazon usually takes 2/3 days not 2/3 weeks. It arrived well packaged and fits the Nexus 4 perfectly. Cut outs are all perfectly positioned, the buttons are slightly more difficult to press but hardly worth mentioning. It does improve the grip of a very slippery phone without collecting fluff and it slips in and out of a pocket smoothly with enough friction to stop it slipping out accidently. The major benefit is the small wrap around onto the front and back, raising it just enough to allow the phone to be put down on either side with confidence and it's grippy enough not to go walkabout when vibrating on a flat surface.
Personally I would have preferred the wrap around edges to have been black, the same as the sides, introducing dark grey onto the black screen makes a discreet almost invisible bumper more obvious than it need be.
As a temporary solution I've kept the original factory screen protector on. On the front I noticed it was cut slightly short of the curved side edges. The wrap around edge of the bumper comes up to the edge of the protector and avoids it being pushed up as reported in other reviews. I am going to look for a slightly undersized screen protector which would be perfect.
This is a slim bumper and I doubt it will protect your phone from a fall onto a hard surface, without luck playing a big part. It is perfectly fine for everyday careful use and will protect against scuffs and general wear and tear. If you want full protection then this is not for you.
All in all I think it was worth the wait. Now where can I get that wireless charger?

I'm very disappointed, nowhere does it say it is being shipped from the USA. With the bumper being instock and supplied by Poetic-UK you would think it would be with you within a week but no it's taking a month. I ordered it on the 30th Dec, delivery date 29th Jan. From the current tracking info it is being scanned in and out of depots in California.
Only the very brave would use the the Nexus 4 without some sort of case. As I'm not brave and want to use my Nexus 4 now I ordered a very nice LG Nexus 4 E960 Wave Hydro Gel Case, it covers the back of the phone but over all does a reasonable job.
I feel I have been deceived and when the bumper eventually arrives it needs to be exceptional or I will be returning it.
UPDATE (after 2 weeks or so) - Fell to pieces after a couple of weeks of careful use (phone in my pocket). Poetic have agreed to ship another as a replacement. I hope it is made better, or I need a refund as I can't be doing with such a poor quality product.
