Product description

An exploration of what constitutes the "poetic" in landscape painting today. It examines ways for artists in all mediums to express the poetic in their painting. According to Elizabeth Mowry, a master of the poetic landscape genre, a key element of his genre is evoking an emotional response in the viewer, which is achieved by the artist's arrangement of natural elements as deeply expressed through his or her imagination, intellect and feelings. The paintings that grace these pages are all visual illustrations of the book's concept of the poetic landscape. Paintings are examined through the specific concerns for achieving the special sense of time and place found in these landscapes such as colour, time of day, time of year, atmosphere and weather; as well as capturing the more illusive qualities that define this genre, such as a sense of place recognition, leading and letting go, and grace of line.

Settle yourself down somewhere comfortable, a drink by your side, making sure you will not be disturbed for a good while, open the pages .... and walk with your eyes through the doorway of the author's lyrical prose into a rich and mystical landscape - a journey of exploration. The senses, mind and heart expand and open to timeless dimensions, as the author explores the use of line, colour, form, weather, and picture format amongst other elements, that, used with awareness and sensitivity can create a poetic landscape. The gentle understated text is illustrated by superb reproductions of her paintings. They have a deceptive simplicity and harmony that not only demonstrate an excellent technical ability, but also allow the imagination to fill in the details and evoke half remembered places and fleeting nostalgic emotions. A beautiful and ageless book to return to time and time again, maybe to revisit the text to discover new learnings, or simply to lose oneself in the dreamlike landscapes. You will not be disappointed - ENJOY!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Treat For The Senses! 28 July 2013
By Sheryl Cutler - Published on

I would buy this book again just for the opportunity to enjoy and be inspired by the many gorgeous reproductions of the author's pastel paintings! I have all of her recent pastel books and treasure them. In all honesty, I did not find most of the text in this book all that much to my liking. That said, with such beautiful artwork, this book would speak to me even if it contained no words at all. If Elizabeth Mowry were to get a chimpanzee to peck out random character strings for the text of her next book, I would happily stand in line to purchase it as long as it contained the same quality of beautiful reproductions of her work as found in this book.
