As it turned out my Son was very disappointed. The required app is no longer available from the Apple Store, which means the keyboard is completely useless. Not impressed 8-(
To me, this is more of a toy than a serious tool for music creation. It has potential for future development, and the app certainly has room for improvement. It could certainly keep a teen occupied for several hours, so I guess it's fairly inexpensive considering the use you could get out of it.
If you search YouTube you can find a clip of Tim Minchin (comedian, performer, pianist) test this on on a BBC show. I recommend watching it as if gives you an idea of scale. It also give you an idea of how terrible the output can sound, even when demo'd by a master musician.
+ Great sound effects
+ Works brilliantly
+ Responsive, most of the time.
- Feels very cheap e.g made from cheap plastic and keys don't feel stable. Does not respond sometimes.
- The app force closes most of the time when trying to send remix through email - the code is not stable.
The app developers need to push out some updates to improve performance. Granted, it's only Version 1.1 (at the time of writing).
The price seems crazy once you realise it doesn't do much more than an under £20 "childrens" keyboard. Ok you can email your final composition to a friend but despite several attempts we never managed that. The setup for the keyboard does allow you to make basic dance style tunes, but if you make a mistake or decide to edit your tune it is far easier just to delete your effort and start again. After a short time it's limitations either leave you wanting to get onto a proper keyboard or just put it back in the box. As others have stated in reviews I also feel this is an opportunity missed by the manufacturer, as they seem to be suggesting its a fun device aimed at budding musicians when it's really just an expensive novelty toy.
The plastic dock adaptors cover the last couple of iterations of the iPhone and iPod Touch and slide into place simply and easily, however I did feel that the dock was hampering my iPods built-in speaker, so it never really sounded loud enough.
After downloading the free App, the tutorial provides a painless introduction to what's possible. It's very easy to pick up. Unfortunately that's largely due to the limited scope of the device.
At best you can put together a decent loop, but that's no more a song than a house brick is a home.
I'd have liked to see a bit more versatility, eg an additional App or a free play mode in the existing App to use the keyboard as a standalone synthesizer. As it is, it's questionable whether the keyboard wouldn't be better replaced with a drum pads for constructing your loops, or integrated drum pads into the keyboard. I'm torn in that respect.
Also there's a real lack of finesse in the editing so generally I found it simpler to delete and start over.
The keyboard itself doesn't feel great - well below what you'd expect from even a budget synth.
Cheap-feeling keyboard, bolstered by an easy to use, but ultimately too simple App.
2.5 out of 5
The product is fun but it is not comparable to a modern keyboard.
It was not all smooth-running, however. After the tutorial I had to fiddle with the app for ages to record anything (even though I could record inside the tutorial). It wouldn't record when I wanted it to, and I had to spend about 10-15 minutes pressing this and that and removing and plugging in my iPhone before it actually worked like it was supposed to.
Once it actually worked, it was fun for a while. Record little snippets of music using different selectable instruments, then put them together to make your own tune. I have to say I'm not a musician, so perhaps this keyboard would be more useful for those really into their music. As it is, I got bored after a very short time and then decided to let my son play on it as a keyboard - he enjoyed it very much.
The quality of the keyboard is quite thin and it looks like it wouldn't last all that long, so I would classify it as a toy (perhaps most suited to 10-16 year olds). You also need to plug in your own speakers to hear anything (or you can use headphones instead). All the work is done by the iPhone and the app, so this is basically a plug-in keyboard for the iPhone/iPod etc. Seems to be a bit expensive for what it is.
