Out of the box, this Osmo Pocket is a brick. It will not do anything. You have to go through a ridiculous procedure to get it to work. First you must register an account on the dji website, even if you did not buy it from them. Only then can you get the thing to work by loging into this account through the app and going through the activation process. All other reviews of this gimbal camera just say that it works with both Apple and Android phones and wave the two connectors at you to prove it. What they fail to tell you is that it will only work with SELECTED ONES. I immediately hit trouble with my brand new Huawei which would not work through the login. I phoned the European help line and was told loads of stuff like reload the app and check my registration. Then they sent me an email which they said would sort it. The email was in Chinese. Translated by Google it said "press on the back to resolve". What?!!!
I then emailed dji direct and was finally told - sorry it doesn't work with your phone, only those on the list. To solve my problem I have had to purchase an old iPhone 6 and that worked fine.
So don't buy this if your phone isn't on the list and don't ever waste your time on the phone to the EU help line cos they haven't a clue.
One further thing - I have just purchased a USB c to 3.5mm connector so that I could plug in my external microphone to my Osmo Pocket, but it does not work. So, it looks like I'll just have to wait till they finally make their own device available, and no doubt pay through the nose for it. But I think I read of someone who had done this successfully, so I'll keep researching.
I'll start with the conclusion to save you time, then detail my reasoning after.. The DJI Pocket is tiny! It has a bright and useful little screen (which makes it great for selfies whereas GoPro is guesswork). The gimble (the DJI USP) is great as you would expect. Video quality is great. Audio is OK for home use but sketchy for youtube. Sometimes it's OK. I give it 4/5 stars. That said, I’ve returned it. Now here's why;
1. The camera is tiny! It's really too small for a man’s hand to grasp slidly. Another 4 or 5 cm in length would have allowed for a larger battery, a tripod screw mount in the base and enough room to allow for an accessory mount to hold a 3.5 mm connection for an external microphone. I don't know why camera manufacturers are soooo slow on recognising quality audio is important - especially for a vlogging camera. It really makes you wonder who works in the design dept!
2. There is a wrist strap (which is needed because it really is tiny and very ‘droppable’ - did I mention that? But it fits the case and not the camera!? Which moron designed that? 'Oooh, I dropped the leather case, glad I have the strap.... I mean WTF!?'
3. Ergonomically it is really clumsy. It is so small that you have to hold it with finger tips. If it was 4cm longer you could grip it with your hand. But it isn't. And the inbuilt mics are exactly where your palm would go!
4. The camera connects to the phone using a lightning or alternate connector. The app launches seamlessly. However - The whole unit hangs off the lightning connector nub. I mean c'mon!? Who would design that unless they owned shares in the manufacturer of the tiny, brittle connector.
5. The battery doesnt last an awfully long time. I’d say less than the quoted 2 hours and it is a built in battery meaning once the battery wears out the whole camera is worthless. That’s a biggy!
6. DJI have done their normal sneaky trick and released their accessories after launching the camera, Buy the tripod mount and wifi base unit and that adds 50% to the purchase price!
On the plus side;
It's small and will make filming documentary style very unintrusive.
Quality seems pretty good. Up to 4K 60 fps. 120 fps slow motion at 1028.
A great stitching option for panorama photos at 12 mp
Good low light with gimble and good face recognition, face following and pretty good auto focus
Great little screen which is good for framing selfies, etc
Usable without a phone
Better pro options when connected to phone (like ISO selections, shutter speeds, etc)
Reliable face follow function which is great for selfie video when camera is on a tripod (for which there is no mounting screw!)
You can attach an external mic with a USB C to 3.5mm cable to avoid being fleeced for the DJI accessories!
The camera delivers very impressive time lapse shots
All in all, this could have been a totally amazing bit of kit. As it is, it's still pretty amazing, but it's annoying that such obvious errors were made in design. It could have been bigger, longer battery life, had an external mic and a tripod mounting thread - which would have made it almost perfect. Shower proof would have sealed it.
Sadly then, this almost perfect bit of kit needs to be £229 to make it a good value, quick access, gimbled 4k alternative. I do love it in principle but I know buyer’s remorse will quickly set in as the battery degrades and the cost of accessories doubles the initial outlay! A real pity to see it go. I think DJI need to address their ethics as the blatant rip off of customers with very expensive accessories to resolve obviously crap design choices is too transparent and very ‘Apple like’.
The DJI Osmo Pocket can be used in place of the camcorder, the phone with gimbal and for the most part the GoPro wth gimbal. I will only be taking this camera and the GoPro next time and no gimbals. The only issue that I can see is that I will not have an optical zoom capability without the camcorder, not a big deal as far as I am concerned.
The DJI comes packaged in a strong compact box and inside you will find: The Camera, a hard plastic carrying case, a wrist strap for the carrying case, a USB to USB C charging cable, a USB C connector, an apple lightning connector, a set of instructions and a few more pieces of paperwork. The two connectors are to allow you to connect the camera to your phone, please see the video. If your phone does not have either an apple lightning connection or USB type C connection, do not buy this product, because as far as I am aware, you cannot use it until you have downloaded the DJI Mimo app, connected the phone and activated it. There may be another way to activate the camera, but I am not aware of one.
The process of activation was a little confusing, but in all fairness it only took a couple of minutes and you have to create a profile with DJI in the process. The app allows you to control the camera via the phone and alter settings etc. I did not spend a lot of time looking at it because the whole idea of this camera as far as I am concerned, is that it fits easily into your pocket and can be pulled out, turned on and used to capture great quality video; anytime any place anywhere, without any fuss. It certainly can do that. I have posted this review on YT if you want to see the video in 4K, unfortunately Amazon compress the files so it is not possible to see how good it is on here.
The camera has two buttons, the one on the left is the on/off/mode button and the one on the right is the shutter release/record button. as well as these buttons there is a very small touch screen that allows you to use the camera and in use it is quite good. The menus only take a little time to get used to and they are all accessed by swiping up or down, left or right from the four sides depending on what you want to do. See the video.
In use the camera is great. The video quality is brilliant, I film mostly in 4K 30fps, but it will also record in 4K 60fps, 1080P up to 120fps. The audio quality is pretty good, certainly good enough for me. The fact that the strap does not fit the camera is ridiculous, I have nearly dropped the camera once already as it is so small. They should certainly have made a strap for the camera to loop around your wrist in use. The gimbal is amazing, hard to believe that they could manufacture it so small and still produce such good results. The start up and shut down process is a joy to watch too. There are three different operating modes for the gimbal; Follow, Tilt Locked and First Person View FPV. Please see the video.
So, as you can no doubt gather, I am very impressed with this camera. Hats off to DJI for producing such a brilliant product. It certainly ticks all of the boxes as far as I am concerned and I love it.
