  • Compatible with most Windows 8.1, 8, 7, Vista, XP, Mac OS X, and Linux / Unix systems. Microsoft Windows systems should install latest manufacturer USB 3.0 host controller drivers and Windows Updates. Apple Mac OS X and Linux / Unix systems require latest operating system updates for best compatibility.
  • Hub is not a standalone charger and will not charge phones or tablets. Apple notes: Some devices such as the Apple SuperDrive look for Apple-specific signaling and will not work when connected through any USB hub. Not recommended for use with USB 3.0 PCI-e add-on cards for older Mac Pro systems because of limitations in their software support for USB 3.0 hubs.
  • Supports USB 3.0 transfer rates up to 5Gbps (640MBps) to allow data to move quickly between devices. Transfer rates are device and USB host controller dependent. Ideal for high-throughput devices such as USB hard drives, flash drives, and USB video adapters. Backwards compatible with all USB 2.0/1.1 devices and hosts. Powerful 5V 4A 20W UL certified laptop-style power adapter with 6+ foot cable.

Product Description

Connect up to seven USB 3.0, 2.0, or 1.1 devices to a single port on any computer. Fully plug and play, devices can be hot-swapped, supports USB over-current protection. Attractive brushed aluminum finish designed to complement high end Apple products, solid feeling, non-skid rubber feet, compact design with 7 blue LEDs (one per USB port) for diagnosing connectivity. Power switch for convenient shut-off of lights and devices.

Compatibility

Featuring the VIA VL812 Rev B2 USB 3.0 hub chipset updated to firmware version 9091 for maximum compatibility with almost all USB 3.0 hosts. Supports Microsoft Windows 8.1 through XP, Mac OS X, and Linux kernels 3.0 and later. Apple SuperDrive not compatible. Older Mac Pros with USB 3.0 PCI Express add-on cards may not work with this or any USB 3.0 hub. Full forward and backward compatibility between USB 3.0, 2.0, and 1.1 hosts and devices. Not recommended for use with older Texas Instruments, Fresco Logic, Etron, or Wistron USB 3.0 host controllers. Requires no driver installation (although individual devices may require drivers). 2.4Ghz wireless devices such as wireless keyboard/mouse receivers, Bluetooth and WiFi adapters, may not work in close proximity to USB 3.0 devices or hubs. Connecting wireless devices to a USB 2.0 port is recommended for best results.

Power and Charging

Comes with premium 5V 4A 20W UL certified power supply for supporting several devices requiring USB 3.0's more demanding 900mA per port power. Functions as a USB hub only, not a standalone device charger: No special charging functionality for charging an iPad, iPhone, or other tablet and smartphone devices with or without a PC connected. Not BC 1.1 / 1.2 compatible.

This is physically identical to the product sold under several other labels and also available via Amazon. The main differences between them are two; a different power supply provided with each and probably a difference in the internal control chip (at least one uses an updated VIA chipset). The PSU provided with this is similar to but smaller than those supplied with laptops rather than one that is housed within the plug.

Not many users will need multiple drives but some certainly do and, for those, power on their hubs can be a problem. If the hub is unable to supply sufficient, one or more drives may mis-function and you could lose or corrupt data. Some suppliers of similar hubs offer 4- and 7-port versions and utilise the same 2 or 2.5A PSUs for both, adequate for 4-ports but not for 7! Plugable have gone far better and provided a 4A PSU in this instance which provides more than the normal 500mA per port, approximately 15% extra, although considerably short of the 'ideal' minimum of 900ma per port. As this employs a separate power lead with figure-8-shaped connectors, they can be replaced if unsuitable but a UK and European version is supplied with this.

As I have used several versions of this design, in 4 and 7-port formats, it is one of the better ones available and the new PSU should make it considerably better still. If I have any criticism, it is the very minor one of the raised central portion which is present on four sides and which makes it not rest well on any surface and needs some double-sided tape or other similar means to prevent the weight of attached cables dragging it away.

This version is more expensive than other brands, presumably to cover the cost of the beefed-up power supply.

Plugable 7 Port USB 3.0 Hub with 4A Power Adapter for UK and EU Mains (VIA Chipset - USB 2.0 Compatible)I have this connected to my iMac running OS 10.8.2.
Power supply appears to give adequate power to all ports;
Spacing of USB sockets is wide enough to insert two thumb drives side by side; a very welcome feature;
No problems with backward compatibility with USB 2 devices.

It arrived quickly, setup was easy. The power supply had a UK plug and there was also a power cord with a European (shaver-socket) plug in the box as well.
The hub has been able to drive an external Blu-ray drive, a MIDI keyboard, USB sound card, and Novation Launchpad at the same time so no real worries about power capacity.
Transfer speeds to USB 3 devices are as quick as you would expect.
The only slight niggle so far is that plugging in some devices causes the whole hub to reset, so this is probably better suited to permanently connected kit.
The activity light by each port is a nice touch- it makes it very easy to spot which ports are actually in use.
This isn't the best USB 3 hub you could ever buy, but it's pretty good for the money.

Update: the hub keeps disconnecting my external hard drive, which is a problem. Also other devices get randomly disconnected over time. There is a new firmware which should help fix the issues on Macs, but in a stroke of pure genius, there is no way to update the firmware from a mac:

Downgrading from 4 stars to 2 based on the unreliability and utterly bone-headed support response.
