Plays Well with Others: The Surprising Science Behind Why Everything You Know About Relationships Is (Mostly) Wrong
Audible Audiobook
– Unabridged
From the author of the Wall Street Journal bestseller Barking Up the Wrong Tree comes a cure-all for our increasing emotional distance and loneliness—a smart, surprising, and thoroughly entertaining guide to help build better friendships, reignite love, and get closer to others, whether you’re an extrovert or introvert, socially adept or socially anxious.
Can you judge a book by its cover?
Is a friend in need truly a friend indeed?
Does love conquer all?
Is no man an island?
In Plays Well With Others, Eric Barker dives into these questions, drawing on science to reveal the truth beyond the conventional wisdom about human relationships. Combining his compelling storytelling and humor, Barker explains what hostage negotiation techniques and marital arguments have in common, how an expert con-man lied his way into a twenty-year professional soccer career, and why those holding views diametrically opposed to our own actually have the potential to become our closest, most trusted friends.
Leveraging the best evidence available—free of platitudes or magical thinking—Barker analyzes multiple sides of an issue before rendering his verdict. What he’s uncovered is surprising, counterintuitive, and timely—and will change the way you interact in the world and with those around you just when you need it most.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 December 2022Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseIt's beautifully backed up by many different research studies and multiple facts. Plus, lots of funny insightful jokes that made me hard to stop reading and I had to finish the book asap. Probably, I became a very annoying person now to all of my friends and other poor creatures who can't start a normal conversation with me without me shoving the facts in their faces and convincing them that this book is what they need in their lives.

Sarah HagueReviewed in France on 23 July 20225.0 out of 5 stars Informative, interesting and fun to read
Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThis is definitely a book for the modern age, an era of individualism, depression and loneliness. It's not me saying that, it's been shown extensively by research. Eric Barker, whose blog I greatly enjoy, took advantage of the pandemic to get his teeth into the subject of relationships and their importance in our lives.
He writes engagingly using stories about real people in real situations, and humour to illustrate the science. It's a fascinating read examining friendship, love, community, appearances and the answer to the meaning of life. No spoiler alerts here...!
It's thoroughly researched - check out the 45 pages of references at the end, excellently written and a jolly good read.
