Was sent an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Payton is in pain. Physically and emotionally. Daily reminders leave her racked by guilt and by terrible headaches. Payton has no time or energy for men, they are seen by her as a distraction from achieving a decent education and on some deeper level she sees her self as 'undeserving'. Payton isn't an easy character to warm to but she is written that way to demonstrate to the reader in a very direct way how determined our hero Josh must be.
Josh is a guy and let's face it like most young, college aged chaps he's trying to juggle his mates, college work load, social life and family. He, like his peers, isn't alway eloquent, he doesn't always think things through but boy does he care. Josh falls hard and fast for our heroine- come on I'm not giving away any big secrets there as this is after all a romance. But these two characters have a long road of heartache and learning a head of them.
I loved Josh's character from the start he is a throughly likeable lad who like many is just trying his best.
Although I'm sure you can read this as a one off I personally feel that this book reads as the first book in a series and should be treated as such. My one criticism is that at times there is seems to be a slight assumption that you know what's going on and some information is missing. But it's also clever as in many respects when you join a group or meet new people you don't know everything. I'm going to read book 2 as I am eager to see how the character of Jackson pans out.

When i began this book, i was slightly mislead because it took a while to warm up. But the more i read and the further into the story i got, i am happy to say that it actually turned into a good book!!!
Josh is studying sports and enjoying school and spending time with his friends. His ex plays him like a fool and really messes with his emotions. Its not until Payton comes into his life, that he compleately removes the ex and sets his sights on 'his future'...
Payton is suffering since her accident! She was pretty much top of the class, but now with her headaches, memory loss and the fact that her mother is on life support, she wonders how she's going to cope! Its not until she meets Josh and she decides to brake her 'no boyfriend' rule, that her life begins to brighten up!
The story is really quite emotional and yes, complicated in places, but once it picks up it really is has a wonderful flow that unfolds into a really heartwarming story! Im looking forward to the next book in series and getting to know the characters even better!!!

Payton always had one rule she lived by, no boyfriends until after college. No one seemed to agree with her, even her own mother who had her at age sixteen. Returning to school after an accident that flipped Payton’s world upside down left her feeling out of control. Holding on to her rule seemed to be her only lifeline.

Josh had been letting the past rule his life for too long. Finally being at school, he’d become his own man, and he’d been putting all that behind him. Just when he thought he had it all put together, life got crazy. Not only did his ex-show back up, but Josh also found he couldn’t get Payton Whitmore out of his head.

Once Josh convinces Payton to give him a shot, she’s so closed off that he wonders if it’s even worth it. Josh can tell there’s something special about Payton though, and as soon as he goes all in, he’s ready to show her that some rules are made to be broken.

Playing by the Rules is a heartfelt story about trust, love and overcoming life’s obstacles. Ever since an accident, Payton has been going through the motions. Class, homework, study, and repeat. Lately she’s been forgetting things she normally wouldn’t and headaches have been killing her. Payton trudges on determined not to let it affect her studies. Then she meets Josh. Josh was handsome and seemed to really like her. She had decided long ago that relationships were not for her but felt her heart changing the more time she spent with Josh.

I really loved this book. I laughed and cried throughout the book. Loved Payton’s personality and Josh is such a sweetheart! I enjoyed the part where the author introduced Josh’s family especially his twin. This is also the first book by this author. The author done an amazing job on writing this book and I can’t wait to read about Jackson. The story is good and you will loved it and I’m officially a fan!

This is Emily Robertson's debut novel and I think she did a great job with it. Her writing engages the reader and has you feeling what the characters are going through. The story line flows well and is well written. The characters and their life stories are believable.

Payton has just returned to college after an accident that has left her world a mess. Her mother still is in the hospital in a coma and Payton would rather be there with her than anywhere else. At the prompting of her grandparent's she returns to school and her studies. Payton has sworn of guys, being the product of a young, single mom, she doesn't want to end up the same way. That is until she meets Josh. He makes her feel and that scares her more than anything. As their friendship grows into more, she continues to hide certain aspects of her life, thinking that she can handle it all on her own. What she has yet to realize is that Josh wants to be the one to help her through anything and everything that may cross her path. He wants to be the strength that she so desperately needs to deal with the wrenches that are thrown in her way.

Josh has his own demons to slay so to speak. Returning to school after kicking his lying, cheating girlfriend to the curd, he sets out to find out who he really is and create the life he wants. He has the chance to be the man he has always wanted to be, away from his family and the competition that his twin brother brings on. When he meets Payton, he feels so protective of her and wants to get to know her better. His character is so sweet, caring and he has this unconditional love for Payton. He helps her take the time that she needs to mend the holes in her heart and he does his best to show her that she is not alone, and that he truly cares for her.

When Payton is called home to say goodbye, she isn't sure if she can find the strength to hold on. She feels as if her world is collapsing all around her and then Josh is there, to help her through it all. But will his love for her be strong enough to get her through all the hard times or will she lock herself and her heart away for good? Grab your copy of this awesome new read and find out for yourself. I highly recommend this book. It is filled with some humor, a sweet love story and the strength to realize that life can go on even after losing those closest to us. That we all deserve to be happy and to have the future that we imagine.

“As he held her and watched her sleep, he noticed the first rays of sunlight coming through the window, and his last thoughts before finally drifting off were how this was the perfect start to his day.”

5 beautiful, romantic stars!! This book was such a cute and fun little read! I loved the characters and the story was so much fun!

I really fell in love with this book the minute I started reading it!! I don’t want to give anything away since it hasn’t been released yet, but I will say that it is such a romantic and sweet book! The characters are so much fun and the story is very well developed and doesn’t drag at all! Great job!

I really enjoyed this book. It really got me in the feels. I laughed and cried. I love Payton’s personality and Josh is such a sweetheart! I could relate so much with Payton. As someone who deals with chronic pain, I was impressed the author included this subject in her story and I think that’s what made me love this story even more. This is the first book that I’ve read from this author and I’m officially a fan! I can’t wait to read more from her. I give this 5 stars
