Spider-man's plot, characters, acting and main story are amazing but it's a game which is let down by a very poorly implemented traversal system and dull challenges which force players to play through sections which may be of no interest to them.
The traversal system is amazing to watch, and when you are travelling long distance it is perfect, however it falls apart entirely when you need to get to any very specific spot. It has the exact same problems assassins creed or just cause have with traversal where fine control is almost non existent. The character prefers to stick to almost everything except the thing you want. This problem unfortunately extends to combat, where you are given the ability to throw objects however there is very little control over which object you throw and who you throw it at. You have similarly little control over which enemy you attack, or which direction you throw them in.
The problems wouldn't matter in the slightest until the game MAKES them matter in the form of challenges which highlight the problems the game has so expertly that you'd have to believe the developers were trying to sabotage themselves. Worse, the challenges MUST be completed to the highest level to unlock everything in the game. It's a design choice that I genuinely cannot get my head around. Endlessly playing the same mind numbing challenge to achieve the gold tier 100% ruined the game for me and lowered the score to a 2. I like a challenge, but I cannot stand being forced to engage in activities I'm not interested in repeatedly just to access all the game has to offer. Getting a gold tier on all of the stealth activities, or all of the combat activities should be enough to unlock everything allowing the player to enjoy the game they want to play instead of being forced to play sections.
The same can be said of the Mary Jane/Miles sections for the most part. I don't think anyone purchased the spiderman game to play as a character with no super powers through a section which adds nothing but filler to the games overall completion time.
All in all the game is good, but the filler drags it down and at points just makes it a chore to play. I actually stopped playing for a week because I couldn't face another Mary Jane section which has to be completed to continue the game. That's how bad it can get.
I’ll admit I’m no comic book obsessive although I did love the Arkham games and the Batman Dark Knight Trilogy...
...and not to mention the Toby McGuire Spider-Man films and the classic Spider-Man PS2 games..
..so maybe it’s just because I’m older and fairly cynical that meant I just wouldn’t enjoy this game...
...don’t get me wrong the best part is slinging around New York exploring and that excitement will last a while....however once you have got bored of that and decide to focus on the story you will find some of the lamest and dullest missions waiting for you to complete...get ready for sling over to the harbour and spray an antidote over the water to save the fish from dying because of water pollution....
All in all I think I’m probably too old for this sort of shit now, it’s definiely aimed at kids.
This game has the same combat repeated with you facing a group of enemies over and over in both the side and main missions. There are game breaking, mission ending bugs throughout. The suit options are horrendous. Graphics in game are mediocre. The original characters are terrible, not as good as the usual way they are portrayed. Horrendous parts controlling a very un MJ and Miles which are very simplistic. There's so much potential here but the controls have you unable to stick to or stuck to walls frequently. There are few of the villains/characters used and the ones that are appear briefly towards the end. I'd give it a 6/10 for some great quips here and there and voice used for Spiderman.
I paid £50 for this game and got rid of it the day after I bought it. It's Boring for me it got repetitive far too quickly. Yes the graphics are great... but same old same old.... got fed up with Spidermans totally unfunny quips in fact he's really annoying. I don't think it's worth the money I'd wait until it comes down in price before buying I felt I had totally wasted my money...
Pre ordered this game as a gift for my boyfriend, back in 2016 when it was first available, and did not get the promised pre order bonuses stated when pre ordering, very unimpressed and unhappy seeing as we’ve waited so long for it to actually come out.
