The weapons are good and have a punch and the one you will use the most is the M2 PN83 'Falchion' automatic rifle. There are secondary weapons available to allow you some flexibility in close quarter encounters but some of the really serious weapons like the Thermite and ARC gun have restricted use which is a pity. You can, of course, pick up various guns as well and use them until the ammo runs out such as the shotgun. The player also has use of a liquid called 'Blackwater' which allows you to unleash 'Blacksight' which is essentially a slow motion mode with choice of targets using the thumbstick. It is short but very satisfying when you pull it off although it can make the game easier.
I played the game on the Hard setting and it took me about nine hours and I am a serious gamer who has enjoyed games for over two decades. I finished the game in a day but then I have finished campaigns for COD and Battlefield in a day, so what? The issue may be for some players that as there is no multiplayer, how can a nine hour game justify full price? The answer depends on what you value. A good shortish game that is fun, engaging, visually like nothing else you have seen and cinematic? Then you should have little to quibble about with The Order:1886. I knew what I was pre-ordering way back in June 2013 and I got exactly that. I am pleased but there have been many low and medicocre score given to this game for reasons which to me seem shallow and suspect. There have also been some high scores, some too generous. I would give this game between 75 and 80 out of 100 if you were judging on content alone. The developers wanted this to be the start of an IP that would span several games and in my opinion this is a good first game and intoduces us to the world and characters which I for one hope they will delve into further in longer games with a lot more content.
There are issues of course. Making the environment destructible would have been preferable and avoiding a monster is only possible when prompted rather than allowing the player to decide. Also unlike in most shooters nowadays you can't pick up a grenade and throw it back - you can just try and get yourself out of harms way. I also wish there was a even harder difficulty level - enthusiasts of the game will play this a couple of times and more difficulty levels would have increased replayability. There are collectibles but these will not interest much in a second run through. I did not miss a multiplayer here but given my age I am used to an era where to single player games dominated - you may well lament the lack of. I also wish the game was less linear than it is especially given how beautiful the it looks. One wishes you could explore it more but I suspect Ready at Dawn, the developers, had their work cut out trying to achieve the the level of visuals they have as well as creating the world of The Order, and creating a more open game was not possible on this occasion. If there is a sequel, it should be much more accomplished,
SHOULD YOU BUY IT? As I said above this depends on what you value. I think anyone who owns a PS4 should buy this game but perhaps wait until prices drop a bit. The length of the game has been talked about in most reviews as an issue so a lower price would make that more acceptable. However, I was happy with my purchase as I did not want to wait in case I get run over by a bus tomorrow.
This game is an experience. It is visually stunning and introduces a world which could support so many interesting stories. As a first game this will do but the next one must have a lot more content and allow the player more freedom. Well done, Ready at Dawn.
So short as this may be, the content is absolutely of the highest quality, the story, characters, acting, GRAPHICS, atmosphere, gameplay elements are all as good as it gets. I mean the graphics alone are in a level all by themselves in next gen gaming.. this is what I expected when I first started playing on my ps4 but until now I hadn’t noticed any huge leap in graphical advances. But the order proves just what the PS4 is capable of, WOW!
The world is so detailed and the locations are beautifully imagined and varied.. some of the textures particularly wooden surfaces actually look real.
The story I think is quite original mixing up elements from various genres. Its kind of knights of the round table meets underworld set in a steam punk Victorian London. At first I was apprehensive when the first lycan appeared as I wasn’t expecting any supernatural element but very quickly as the story unfolded I was absolutely gripped. I don’t think iv ever been so gripped and engaged in a game story.
The character development and voice acting were superb.. masterful! Why on earth cant Hollywood come out with films as good as this!!
All of this makes for a very immersive experience, and coupled with the great albeit unoriginal gaming mechanics identical to those in naughty dog titles its an absolute blast to play through. I found the combat elements to be quite challenging in places, especially the shotgun guys who basically kill you with one hit but need a good 5 shots to die themselves.
There’s a good variety of weapons although some are better than others. There’s some really cool and very powerful guns but I found the standard rifle to be the best for the most part. However it really depends on the situation what gun will work best.
I loved the stealth element of the game in the gardens at night, where you HAVE to be stealthy.. that was a nice touch! Plus some of the puzzles that popped up were welcome additions.
The cut scenes do detract from the pacing, and you’ll find yourself putting the controller down while you watch the scenes unfold. I guess this could be cripplingly boring for some, but I loved the plot so much it wasn’t a chore to watch. At the end of the day cut scenes are always going to be hit or miss depending on who’s playing.. I can’t get through a rockstar or Metal gear solid game simply because of how painfully boring, long and frequent I find the cut scenes. The same could be said by others playing the Order.
Due to this Its been said that the Order is a very cinematic experience as opposed to a gaming one which is quite true overall.. but so what, its better than any film iv seen in years and was some of the most fun gaming iv experienced in a while too. It’s a refreshing change from all the open world games we get nowadays, its nice to just play through a great story and feel satisfied at the end once you’ve completed it. Take it for what it is and it will reward you…
As for replay value, I’ll definitely play it through at least one or two more times as I would watch a block buster movie a few times if I really like it.
My only complaint would be all the unanswered questions at the end, as ultimately the main bad guy is not even dealt with. If there is a sequel then all is forgiven ' …. Please let there be a sequel to this!
So to sum it up The order 1886 is in my opinion a masterpiece in storytelling, and in realising a completely new and original universe as beautifully as this. It doesn’t deserve the negative press it’s received from critics, so if you can find a copy for less than 20 quid definitely pick it up!
