A voodoo/police detective story that was OK although my interest started to wane a bit towards the end of the book. It was quite atmospheric and the descriptions of the Deep South area were OK. I'd probably read the next in the series as I'm not sure how much you can squeeze out of a detective series based entirely around voodoo.

If I'm completely honest, I bought this book on the kindle on the basis that I really enjoyed Anne Frasier's Hush, and I read the single review posted in entire block capitals ripping into her for this novel, and thought that I couldn't rely on such a harshly worded and not very constructive review. So here I am.

It's not as thrilling or engaging as Hush....the main characters take a bit more getting used to - both equally flawed and with their own personal problems and skeletons in the closet.....as you'd expect - but they are rather likeable in the end. One or two twists and turns and not half as much 'voodoo' or 'root magic' as the reviewer below outlines - although this plot line was a bit grating and I can't help but think the story would have been better without this added detail.

All in all, not Frasier at her best, but still worth a read if you enjoyed her other novels.

I bought book 3 in this series as a Kindle special, but was intrigued by the storyline and decided to read the previous two first. Great decision! I love the characters, both detectives damaged in their own ways, but set amidst the dark side of Savannah. I have never been to that area, but the descriptions were so good I had no trouble imagining it. The storyline also had enough twists to keep the reader enthralled, but not so many that you lose the plot!

i chose to read this book as I have been to Savannah,a wonderful, very pretty place, and had chosen Pretty Dead as my Amazon free loan, and someone mentioned in their feed back that one should read Play Dead and Stay Dead first. I was very disappointed in the unnecessarily frequent references to "stinking flesh" in this book. Once in my opinion would have been enough. I almost gave up reading it, but persevered. I thus did not feel it merited more than two stars.

Really creepy story involving zombies, murder and good old fashioned horror. My only regret is that it wasn't longer. Just as I was really getting involved with the characters the book ended. Nevertheless, I will now read others by this author.

A truly different slant on detective work. Frequently edge of the seat category and a genuine page turner. Difficult to hazard a guess as to 'who dunnit', clever twists and turns. Certainly recommend the book and praise to Anne Frasier.

Very dark, very different with a very different story line. Full of suspense with a surprise ending. The plot and characters held my interest throughout. Hope to read many more Anne Frasier Elise Sandburg thrillers. Would recommend. Trevor Pearson.

The main characters are in the police, but don't expect any policework or methodology/procedures. It is more about relationships and someone trying to find out their history or bury their demons. Not a great read in my opinion and when all is revealed it's a bit of a letdown. Not one for me.
