Stand-up comedian, actress and singer Lea DeLaria is an all-round performer. On Play It Cool she presents a less confrontational image than on 1994's Bulldyke in A China Shop, adopting the role of seductive, witty, confident and heterosexual jazz chanteuse to perfection. Her voice ranges from little girl lost innocence to harder edged tones, both suited to the opening "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd". With stylings from Billie Holiday to Judy Garland, "I've Got You're Number" heads straight for the heart of 1950s big-band balladry, improvised scat vocals proving DeLaria can swing with the best. "Cool" is anything but, the accompaniment understated, that voice dripping with the promise of sex. In "With Every Breath I Take" we get to imagine every late night smoky bar in every old Hollywood film we've ever seen and while pastiche, the characterisation is startlingly evocative. DeLaria sums it up with "All That Jazz", confidently suggesting, following her recent twin roles in the lavishly acclaimed 2000 Broadway revival of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, that this girl just wants to have fun playing bad. When she sings "Life Has Been Good To Me" she has such an upbeat twinkle you suspect she means every word. --Gary S Dalkin

Having seen Lea DeLaria as a comedian (I was lucky enough not to arrive late, or sit in proximity to the front!) I gave this CD a listen more out of curiosity, having caught site of her singing on late night TV and finding myself oddly impressed. I can see why 'Play It Cool' has had such strong reviews. Here is a voice of extraordinary dexterity and versatility - yet so measured and centred. The arrangements of these standards are undoubtedly rich and nightclub evocative; but they are not at all obtrusive. Indeed often they complement the intensity of DeLaria's voice perfectly. Of course not everything is as it seems, and nor is it intended to be: there is more than a little tongue-in-cheek alongside the smoke and the swing. But that's how jazz song is meant to be. 'Cool' is the standout (or should I say stand-up?) number for me. But it is thankfully difficult to choose. In summary: Lea DeLaria is an extraordinary talent. She even refreshed these classics for someone more drenched in the avant and instrumental ends of jazz. But then I should have remembered: the songbook always speaks anew, and here it has found another compelling voice.

This recording is horribly overproduced. Delaria's undoubtedly lovely voice is clearly put through god knows what kind of processer to turn these numbers into unexciting wallpaper music. The stand-up comic's timing is evident in the delivery. Sometimes it works, but mainly it just sounds arch and mannered. I looked forward to hearing this disc, but I found nothing here for me. Not one to share with Sue Lawley.

5.0 out of 5 stars DIG THIS DISC !! 4 Oct. 2001
By LuelCanyon - Published on Amazon.com

This is a smashing CD! SO fine! Sandra Bernhardt says DeLaria is "the best singer in the world", and by the end of this disc, one is rendered incapable of resisting such a laden declaration! Opening with a straight ahead version of "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd", DeLaria immediately opens up her box of MUSICAL gifts. Everything is within her high View, Everything's been seen to, Everything is New and Right, and on top of that, she turns Larry Goldings loose on piano! Potent stuff! DeLaria follows with a post-hip "Cool," and a galvanizingly other-worldly "With Every Breath I Take". Listen: Lea Delaria's got Intelligence -the Bright and Mystic kind!- and MUSICIANSHIP as deep and riveting as it comes. The Voice? Glory in spades, people! It's the real thing! In the end, though, it's the purest musicianship of this woman, and of the artists she has with her here, that makes this disc so Inevitable, and unforgettable. That, and the incredible entry she makes after the instrumental break on "Welcome To My Party" - !!! Who knows what makes a singer great, or why and how such extraordinary gifts come along, redeeming us? This disc goes a long classic cool way in offering evidence as to why Lea DeLaria is 'happening' right now! Fly, Lea, fly baby!! This is just the best music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh My God!! 17 July 2001

I popped this CD into the car stereo and was so entranced by "The Ballad of Sweeny Todd", I couldn't put the car in gear and leave!
I bought the CD because I loved Ms. Delaria's rendition of "Broadway Baby" on a Sondheim CD. I was floored by her ease with the smoky cabaret style jazz on this album.
If you can picture yourself sitting in a quiet, out of the way bar, listening to a hot trio and girl singer, this is a must-have.

LOVE IT
5.0 out of 5 stars Lea D. Is a Brilliant Jazz Vocalist--Buy This Now! 28 Aug. 2009
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Lea Delaria is a brilliant and legitimate jazz vocalist. By "legitimate" I mean she's really a jazz singer, not a pop crooner doing jazz standards like the overrated, overexposed, and totally boring Diana Krall. Lea knows how to make her voice sound like a clarinet: straight, perfectly in-tune tones, legato lines. She can make her tone smile and smirk and snarl. She's the real deal.

Unfortunately I think many people associate her with some not-so-great-in-retrospect comedy, TV, and film performances she did in the 90s, playing a self-parodying self-described "bulldyke in a china store." Well, she's so much more than that.

The repertoire choices, the arrangements, and the ensemble's performances are sophisticated and first-rate.

Several years ago I got to hear Lea live in a San Francisco nightclub. She was absolutely in command from the first minute to the last. Everything was perfect. Too bad the audience wasn't larger--I was really surprised and disappointed by that. I've wanted to do everything I could to promote her ever since.
5.0 out of 5 stars Everyone does it, and seldom as well... 9 April 2004

All I can say is...WOW.
When my partner and I saw Lea perform her routine in P-town, she wowed us with a stunning version of one of my all-time favorites, "The Ballad of Sweeny Todd." We bought her CD on the spot and it stayed in my car's CD player for weeks on end (and then I only took it out because I had to switch cars).
I enjoyed the whole album, but I found myself playing the first track over and over, and even singing it in the shower. I must disagree with the "Cigar" review on all counts, at least regarding this track. The song lends itself so beautifully to swingin' jazz I can't believe nobody thought of it before. But I'm glad no one has, because Lea Dellaria knocks it out of the park. The smooth delivery is perfect for the dry humor of the lyrics, her belts are such a perfect blend of head and chest it sends chills up my spine, and the arrangement is spot-on. The best part - it stands up beautifully to repeat listenings; I just can't grow tired of this rendition. The opening track alone is worth twice the price of this CD.
