Product Description

Review

?It is a great guide for those looking to take their wet plastering skill set a bit further. It provides an introduction to the techniques of modern plastering and a comprehensive treatment of present–day fibrous plasterwork.? ( Homebuilding & Renovating, December 2009)

About the previous edition:

?an excellent publication which no plasterer should be without.?

From Plasterers? Craft Guild Newsletter

′This up–to–date publication must be one of the best books ever written on the plastering craft and believe me I?ve read a few!′

From Plasterers? Craft Guild Newsletter 2007

From the Back Cover

This book will serve as an excellent text for NVQ plastering students, whilst its encyclopaedic structure enables the experienced plasterer to select information quickly on finer points when faced with an unfamiliar task. Architects and surveyors will welcome it as a guide to the scope of the craft and its materials, and as a reference for conservation work.

It provides a thorough introduction to the techniques of modern plastering and a comprehensive treatment of present–day fibrous plasterwork.

Also included are full technical details of solid work, and thorough coverage of obsolete practices for the purpose of conservation work. It features working drawings in isometric projection to present a three dimensional picture of specific jobs.

The Fourth Edition has been updated to take account of new products and techniques, in particular machine plastering, and changes in health and safety requirements. The sections on Floorlaying, Plasterboard and Internal Plastering have been totally rewritten and all subjects have been checked against Standards. Legislation and regulations have been brought up to date.

Published in association with the Plasterers’ Craft Guild.

I was looking for a book to teach me how to board and plaster rooms in my house. This book does not teach the techniques that I was looking for. It goes into great detail about techniques for plaster moulding but only has about two pages that help with boarding and plastering and was the wrong choice for me!

To be fair, the blurb does indicate the most likely target audience for the book. Unless you are either a professional or an apprentice in need of a quick means to refresh yourself in some term or tactic then it would be best not to buy this book. "Encyclopaedia", yes: training manual, no.
My fault for buying the book, not the publisher's fault.

As the other reviews have said this is not a dummies guide to plastering this is an advanced reference book for professional plasterers I bought this because I needed to cast some plaster colums whigh I had not done since I was an apprentice and this was I deal to remind me of the bits I had forgotten I would recommend this to professional plasterers who want to do a bit more than your average site work but this is not a book for novices as it requires a certain level of competence to understand much of it

5.0 out of 5 stars Plastering: An Encyclopedia 5 Mar. 2010
By Thomas P. Riley - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Quite a comprehensive volume. Probably of more use to a person with some practical plastering background rather than a complete novice. The writers do assume some prior knowledge on the part of the reader, however that's not to say a novice couldn't gain something from this book, it's not a version of Plastering for Dummies.

5.0 out of 5 stars great! 27 Dec. 2011
By K. Sun - Published on Amazon.com

The book answered a lot of questions of terms. I wasn't familiar with many vocabulary of plastering like "cornices" or "Darby". I have been plastering for about 6 years and this book helped me better understand the craft and the tools. Plus I am not a big reader and I breezed through it!
