'Planning Lessons and Courses' is a very valuable book for new teachers wishing to teach English to speakers of other languages. The Cambridge series (Handbooks for Language Teachers) is excellent and this is one of the books in this series. It provides plenty of practical guidelines at the level of lesson planning and this is an area where most newly qualified English language teachers need plenty of guidance. There is also a lot of useful guidance on planning courses. Well worth buying.

Offers excellent advice and a variety of ideas for planning and making the most of ideas to use in lessons. Begins with helpful suggestions and activities that help the teacher in getting to know their students to create a profile. Suggests different ways of structuring written plans, ways of capturing unexpected outcomes that occur in lessons, and incorporating vocabulary 'threads' over a succession of lessons. Each chapter nicely summarized. A must have item for the EFL / ESOL teacher.

This volume has so little to commend it that its a wonder it was ever published. One thing it certainly didn't teach me about was a new strategy (or indeed any strategy) for designing a lesson. It was one of those books that you carry on reading because it seems to be just about to lead on to an incredible revelation or insight but never ever ever ever yields the goods. So, I finished reading it feeling like I'd just seen one of those "movies" - ie pretty bl...dy cheap. What was worse, the diction the author deployed was often very hard to stomach, and I found some of her "advice" about real textbooks quite disturbing. So, I really wish I'd just bought a good standard student's text book instead, and reflected more on how the real experts go about things.
