Bree and Max are two very well-drawn characters and their attraction for each other is well-written and played out against Max’s efforts to find his wife. There’s a villain, of course, and he’s one who doesn’t give up easily. Foiled in one scheme, he simply tries another and though he and Max never get to the dueling stage, he does get his comeuppance in the end.
With a hint of Jane Eyre and more than a touch of Pride and Prejudice, this is a very entertaining story containing all the well-worn elements of a Regency novel written in a fresh way. Sensual in places but not overly-so, it’s a delightful distraction with well-delineated characters and a couple of new twists on an old plot.
This novel was a gift from a friend and no remuneration was involved in the writing of this review.
