Product Description

Product Description

*Just over ten years after its original release, this album, named as one of the albums of 1996 by much of the music press, has been augmented by another disc of sixteen tracks incorporating single versions, b-sides, demos and live material from a Paris concert recorded at the Cigale in November of the same year. Together with revamped artwork and a sixteen page booklet, this is a lovingly curated release.

Debate about different bands, albums, genres, proliferate music lover chat. One of the most contentious , and like all these debates fiercely subjective - topics is the greatest debut album. Should it be The Stones Roses, "Definitely Maybe" ( definitely not) "Mummer" "Real Life" , "Never Mind The Bollocks" and so on . Well here's a real left field contender . "Pioneer Soundtracks"..... a truly fantastic album , now available in expanded form. Musically audacious and emotionally captivating with some impressive lyrics "Pioneer Soundtracks" is well named because while it reminds you of other bands -The Tindersticks are an obvious comparison - it cuts a innovative swathe mixing forlorn grandiose balladry with swirling purple prose pop.
While the album was critically feted by critics on release and much promised by the bands front man -elegant Cardiff born fop Anthony Reynolds -the band released two more albums before sliding off the radar. Essentially this album is split into two sides ( Reynolds said "side one is all about putting your make up on, plucking your eyebrows. Side two is meant to hold your hand when you come down the morning after".) though of course this doesn't really translate on CD. Side one of my old worn vinyl copy is the more up-tempo , rockier poppy side . The string arrangements slash across the melodies like samurai swords or swirl around like a plastic bag in a tornado on the vertiginous wonders "Biography Of A First Son" and Wintercomessummer" . "White Jazz" is a more staccato post punk number but opening track "Of Lights" augers bleakly for what is to come with an ominous brooding vibe that foreshadows , or so it would seem some great personal cataclysm .

This is a startling debut album, from a band who promise to produce more excellent and distinguished works. It is clear that this album is something of an experiment, as much of the album wavers between pop-rock, and something unseen before - poetry set to music, but with the unseen hand of Guernica wavering in the background. The opening track '... of lights' takes some time to get going, building the listener up into something of a frenzy of anticipation, only to let them down by not giving the implied rock, but instead a cutting and erudite vision of post-modern London: 'In a cafe over coffee, he remembers Rachel, and how her wrists were like china. While in some warehouse across the river, her daughter's raped, to canon in D minor'. Possibly, the band back away somewhat from this harsh incision, pleading for the world to be nicer, but throughout the album, there are substantial glimses of their shrewd insights, and their vicious black humour. Less pop-rock than Travis (possibly some similarities to parts of 'Good Feeling'), the band's most effective moments are in the calm, pensive tracks, such as 'I didn't mean in Marie' and 'Hope is a liar'. With titles reminiscent of 'The Smiths', one might expect pure self-hated, but there is much that endears an audience to Jack through this album, especially with the wit and wisdom of tracks like the bouncy 'Biography of a first son'. Ultimately, the album is not as polished as 'The Jazz age', their second, but has much of the beauty of its successor, and certainly has much to recommend it.

Jack - Pioneer Soundtracks: 10th Anniversary Edition (Spinney)
It's nice to welcome this album back into the land of the living. Initially released a decade or so ago, "Pioneer Soundtracks" received a glowing reception from critics (myself included) and fans alike. It's aged well. The original album was split into two very distinct parts. The first half was very upbeat, and wore its post punk influences on its sleeve. Think Momus, Tindersticks, John Foxx's Ultravox and you'll understand that although it bounced along, it did so in the shadows. The second half was a different story altogether. The shadows were left far behind, and instead we're left wandering slowly through the pitch-black darkness. "Didn't Mean It Marie" and "Dress You In Mourning" would probably have felt just at home on Lou Reed's "Berlin" album. It always seemed to work better on vinyl than CD, but that's a fairly minor quibble. Buy it on CD and programme your player however it works best for you. Anyway, this being a special edition, we get a bonus CD that compiles some singles, EPs, alternative versions, a live studio outtake, a demo, and half a dozen tracks recorded live in Paris. All are worth having, especially the "Kid Stardust" 45 and the live versions of "...Of Lights" and "White Jazz". 9/10.

A promising debut that never got much attention. Literate, edgy indie pop in the Tindersticks vein. Quality!
