However the chroma key sheet is a nice bonus.
First the good: It rarely crashes (and I haven't put any updates on it). And it comes with a green cloth thing for your "chroma-key" effects.
However, that is about it for the good. It's OK. But so's Windows Moviemaker, and that's free.
The bad: It's comes with a few decent effects and transitions, but 90% of the listed ones you'll have to buy add-ons to use. The reviewers who mentioned the incorrect product keys and manuals are right, and that's REALLY annoying. This was the same in the previous version, but I expected it to have changed at least a little...
The ugly: The sound mixing controls are still fiddly and clumsy. Changing an effect or something with the soundtrack makes the program regenerate the transitions and effects for the whole film again. That means waiting an awful long time if you've got a half-hour film with lots of effects and transitions, and I've got an OK machine (2-core 3GHz 3GB RAM)
I wouldn't buy this again given the choice. I'd maybe stick with Moviemaker or more likely buy Adobe Premiere Elements.
I always used to use Studio 8, 9 & 10 for normal DV editing and DVD creation, I absolutely loved the easy editing interface and transitions, it was heavily bugged at first but patches eventually sorted that out.
Then I started shooting HD Video and Pinnacle 10 was no longer up for the job (slow and jittery plus crashed) so started using the hugely frustrating & complex Premiere Pro 2, makes you appreciate Pinnacles easy editing interface.
I always missed Pinnacle even though I was getting great results from Premiere Pro.
Then Studio 11 was released and I eventually decided to try it again so bought the Ultimate package...
(I should have downloaded the trial version in hindsight)
Installation was straight forward if not long winded with all the extras and I was pleased to see the interface had not changed too much, I was also very pleased to see it scaled to fit the window now, off I went and captured and edited my HD video, smiling away at how easy it was, so all was great up to the 'Make Movie' part......
I really have to say the encoding sucks, very limited size options and only single pass encoding which produces simply awful quality compared to Premiere's Media encoder, Interlacing was also a big problem with no option found to 'De-Interlace' the video and the help files had no mention of De-Interlacing at all, so tried the online help, again no results and resigned myself that Pinnacle doesn't De-Interlace. I could be wrong but I've spent a lot of time reading and trying to find info on it with no results.Read more ›
