5.0 out of 5 stars Great pen, but make sure you know whether you are getting a converter 4 Oct. 2015

This pen is very nice. The SF nib is expressive, although it is not a flex or semi-flex nib. But it gives handwriting enough line variation and character, especially with the right ink, to be satisfying.

The bonus is that the Pilot Custom 74 takes Pilot's largest converter, the Con-70. It holds almost as much ink as piston fillers do. However, my pen came with no converter at all! This was an unwelcome surprise when the pen arrived. I the had to order the Con-70 separately. Some vendors automatically include the Con-70, so it is worth checking, unless you intend to use the pen exclusively with cartridges.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best fountain pen I've ever had 7 Aug. 2013
By Earendil - Published on Amazon.com
I purchased my Pilot custom 74 nine years ago (with broad nib).
The best pen I've ever had. I use it every day and it never failed once.
I hope to keep using it still for a very long time!

5.0 out of 5 stars This second pen is fantastic! It took several weeks to ship from Japan ... 19 Nov. 2015

The first pen I ordered came in two days but it was a dud skipping and blotching and driving me crazy. I sent it back and Amazon gave me a quick refund. I have other pilot fountain pens and I have faith in the brand so I ordered another one. This second pen is fantastic! It took several weeks to ship from Japan but it was worth the wait. I bought a Con-70 ink converter for it, this is one of the few pens you can use this larger converter in and is part of the reason I bought the pen, it holds twice as much ink as the Con-50 that most Pilot pens use so the ink lasts a very long time between refills. Of course the best and most important part of the pen is the nib and my 14 carrot gold extra fine nib writes wonderfully. It writes in all directions, never skips or blotches and starts right away even if it is not used for days, which is not very often. Extra fine can be a little scratchy but the sweet fine line is worth it. The pen is light and solid. The cap screws on and posts well. The clip works good and seems strong. And because this is a Japanese import pen it is much less expensive than the USA model. I did have to buy the converter separately. You can flex the nib to get a thicker line but it is fairly stiff which is great for everyday use. I'll be using this pen for many years to come!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best fountain I ever had 26 Oct. 2013

I first bought this Pen in Tokyo in 2004.
Unfortunately I lost it during a long haul travel.
I rushed to buy a new one.
The best fountain pen I ever had. Flows easily, never stains, never get stuck even after a long summer time stop.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful 14K SF nib 26 Jan. 2016

Great pen at a great price. I really like the SF nib. It give more bounce which I like when compared to really hard and inflexible nibs. It is very lightweight which I'm not accustomed to but it is comfortable.
