The book is similar to David Craig's other books, a bit sensationalist, not very thorough, not especially well organised, a bit like tabloid journalism. It's written before RDR which might make it somewhat obsolete (or might not make much difference, we'll see). All of the above takes a star off for me.

But now for the important point: in a very easy to read, short and entertaining book, David Craig describes the essentials of how the finance industry in Britain works in all its smugness and corruption. Anyone who ever considered getting a pension, paying a financial adviser or buying into a unit trust or managed fund should read this book first. It really could make the difference between retiring comfortably and old age in poverty. Even better, buy copies for your friends and relatives because if enough people read this book, a lot of overpaid financial advisers and fund managers are going to have to find something more socially useful to do with their lives.

This book shows readers how much of their money is being siphoned off from their pension and savings plans. My only criticism is that it does not give enough details of how to avoid this exploitation (the 2o tips at the back of the book do not go far enough).

In the mid 1980's I supplied computer systems to a number of merchant banks and a fund manager took it upon himself to tell me what the facts of the financial services industry were. I think the man must have had a dislike of his job, but like many a 45 year old he couldn't see anything else that he could do.

This book mentions all of the tricks, lies and deceits which that man told me about, together with a few that he did not.

The advice that my merchant bank friend gave me has been invaluable to me and this book is one which I can thoroughly recommend.

Mortgages and (possibly) school fees on one side, few financial matters are more important than pensions or savings. In this invaluable book David Craig exposes much of the sharp practice and chicanery that can end up fleecing the unwary. Surprise (and help) somebody you know by giving it to them for Christmas.
