5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing 10 Feb. 2014
By hh - Published on Amazon.com

I have had this book for weeks now and can't ever get past a few pages at a time. Not because the material is so dense (the essays are fine), but because I keep falling into the historical pictures. Each is beautifully reproduced here. Each begs one to don an avatar and step back in time to experience it. And then, when ready to come back to the present, the accompanying comparison pics give one a visceral sense of change that really cannot be conveyed in words. Pick a page, any page, and go down the rabbit hole.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and Fascinating 19 Nov. 2013
By Fussyperson - Published on Amazon.com

This perfectly suits my interest in architecture. I always wondered what Paris looked like in the years before it's restoration. This is marvelous. The images show before, after, early 20th century and now, all side by side . The shots are taken from the same vantage point. Fascinating.
If anyone is interested in set design for early Paris, this is a must. Even if you try to imagine what Paris looked like when you read novels and history - wow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Then-and-now Paris 18 Jan. 2014

Marville's photos were brilliant. This book includes those images side by side with current images of the same photo, letting the reader see the change in the city over the last few years. Brilliant.

5.0 out of 5 stars The City of Light at Once Moody & Ablaze 11 Dec. 2013
By Joel Graber - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
One thinks of Paris as timeless, though the famous Manhattan grid, for example, established in 1811, long preceded that of the modern French capital, devised by Georges-Eugène Haussmann decades later. But Manhattan was a clean slate above Houston Street, while Haussmann confronted a fully-built, thriving metropolis. Consistent with his sense of the momentous, Haussmann commissioned the leading architectural photographer of the day, Charles Marville, as official documentarian of Parisian urban reformation. Thereafter, another visionary, Eugène Atget, whose work later influenced the likes of Man Ray and Berenice Abbott, pursued the same theme. Here, the author retraces many of their steps, re-photographing nearly 200 sites with a large format 4 x 5 camera. The luscious side-by-side results are amazing, thought-provoking, and ethereal. Piercing Time, further leavened through essays by experts in art, architecture and urbanity, constitutes a stellar treatment of the City of Light.
