Wiliam Orbit 's "Pieces in a Modern Style is an ambient album that rejigs 11 works by classical composers in a particularly tacky fashion. Even though Orbit has proved his mettle as an innovative and exciting producer for others--Blur's 13 and Madonna's Ray of Light--this is an ungainly meeting of the sublime and the absurd that, frankly, doesn't work. Samuel Barber's "Adagio for Strings", Ludwig Van Beethoven's "Triple Concerto", Henryk Gorecki's "Piece In the Old Style 1" and Antonio Vivaldi "L'Inverno" are four of the pieces that unfortunately meet their maker in a crude pile up of flat, belching synths and wallpaper flourishes. If he had combined live instrumentation with a playful reverence for the arcane glories of the past--perhaps he could have managed to make reality out of that most elusive of notions: experimental music that actually sells. However, Orbit fails to do anything more than resemble a second rate Vangelis. --Maxine Kabuubi

What a simply awful review that Maxine Kabuubi of Amazon.co.uk has given this beautiful album, and I strongly disagree with her opinion. What she has had to say about this release simply isn't true. If as a William Orbit fan, you were expecting another volume in his hugely popular "Strange Cargo" series, then I can see how you might initially be a little disappointed, as this album is a completely different kettle of fish altogether. "Pieces In A Modern Style" was a completely new project on the part of Orbit and was never intended to be like the music of the Strange Cargo releases which preceded this album. This release showcases the ambient side of Orbit's music, and these interpretations and reworkings of well-known classical pieces are dreamy, ethereal in quality and very soothing. Here is a masterpiece testifying to what a fantastic and versatile musician, producer and arranger Orbit is. "Pieces In A Modern Style" conveys his appreciation of the great composers and I think it is a great tribute to them!

Ok, not all the tracks are great, in fact there are one or two that are awful. But it is an interesting attempt to rework some classical pieces and some are absolutely excellent. Great to chill out too and the triple concerto is excellent. Above all it is refreshing and stands out as slightly novel, although perhaps the orbital will not think so.

A true quality album in every way

I read about this in the Big Issue (a UK magazine) when it came out, and although I firmly plant my flag these days in the death and extreme end of metal, I still save room for Aphex Twin next to my heart (aside Fear Factory, of course), so a highly regarded ambient trance artist performing classical music in his medium really pushed my buttons immediately. I honestly bought this album at 08:30 on the day of release; I'll admit it was somewhat of a risk, but the review mentioned who Orbit was, and has worked with in the past.

While some dismiss this as a man with a keyboard playing around with soft audio sounds (imagine blurring an image, only with sound), this is a missed wonder - a craftsman almost mastering his work (but not fully).

Barber's "Adagio for Strings" has the highest attention in the album, as first track, and a very popular piece. Performed rather minimally compared to the rest of the album, there isn't much (or any) layering like other songs, and this is a power to the song - its simplicity and urgency. Of course you can listen to his as a string piece, but this is ambient electronic - it sounds closer to a subliminal representation of the song.

Other tracks tend to layer up the sound more, my other favourites being the timeless "La cavellaria rusticana (forgive my spelling if incorrect), and " in a landscape" - both providing soothing subliminal work while layering other audio instruments to create a mild palette of relaxation and beauty.

Physically, this album is wonderful too - the CD (when new) comes with a grey/sepia printed glossy card sleeve of Orbit to wrap up the album. The CD itself is a glossy grey/sepia too, better than just whacking text on a CD in Times New Roman. The liner notes are printed on high quality glossy paper, and feature beautiful photographs of flowers in sub-macro, with powerful hues and aperture.

This album is truly a wonderful, high-quality piece, which may toward the end slightly bore (the better pieces are at the front in my opinion), but should be in every serious music lover's collection, regardless of their musical orientation - Even when it fails to perfectly capture a song, the work is still admirable, and both powerful and relaxing, and I guarantee you don't get those properties alongside these production values very often at all.

Not his best - but look for the first release edition

As other veviewers have noted, this William Orbit is by no means a classic and parts of it are rather dire - in fact, downright disappointing. However, one fact is worth noting - almost immediately after it was first released it was hastily withdrawn and record shops were asked not only to return unsold stock but, if possible, to reacquire for return any copies they had already sold. This was because of the threat of legal action because of some of the samples that were originally used. The recording was later reissued. Whether nor not this was after copyright problems had been resolved or because W.O. used alternative sources, I do not know, but if you're after a collectible it is that very first release that would be the one to get. It may also have had a different cover and have been tagged with the added credit 'The Electric Chamber'. That certainly all describes my copy.

Oh dear, what a letdown this CD is after Orbit's other work. The last 2 'solo' albums (Strange Cargo & Hinterland) and his stunning production work with Caroline Lavelle and Madonna just don't prepare one for just how average this is. I have been a huge fan for the last few years, but as a lover of classical as well as pop, I have to say he has no feel for reinterpretation in the way that Walter/Wendy Carlos has. There's no excitement or stuff that takes your breath away. Instead we have (mostly) tired old analogue string machines churning out the music. You would think that keyboard technology stopped in 1977 listening to this album. There's even background hiss on one track - inexcusable. I think the fundamental problem is that Orbit has absolutely no understanding of how to voice the music in a new and exciting way - as The Art of Noise do on their brilliant Seduction of Claude Debussy. Stick to pop (in it's broadest sense) William - it's what you understand and you're brilliant at it.
