This is an author that simply refuses to accept anything less than perfect. She doesn’t sugar coat reality, she doesn’t hide in the fluff that is love and romance, no she stands her ground in the here and now, firmly entrenched in the grit and grime of real life. Up to her eyes in the angst and attitude that living in the here and now brings not only to the characters but also to the world they live in.
Camden is the sort of character that will find your weakness and force his way under your skin and what’s more, you’ll let him.
He has lived his whole life on the wrong side of acceptable, struggling every day for the most basic of things but what he has never been without is the love that he has for the girl that has been the only positive constant in his miserable existence…Yanelys. His family destroyed not only themselves but him as they tore themselves apart and it was the realisation that no matter the magnitude of the horror that surrounded him, she would always be by his side that led him to take the most momentous of decisions without discussing it with her. He couldn’t allow her to throw everything she could be away because of him and in a moment of honourable madness he took off and left her behind.
0I understood what he was thinking, did I agree with him? in some respects, Yes I think I did but that didn’t mean I wanted him to go because I knew what it was going to do to Yan and my heart broke for her.
Years later and he’s back. He has been to hell and back but have his feelings changed?
Has Yan changed? Can she see through the veil of self-loathing that he has blanketed himself in find the man that she loves? Can she see that her broken boy is now nothing more than a shadow of a man, desperate for her to see what she is too him…she is the reason he breathes, the reason he puts on foot in front of each other each day but Yan knows that for them to work again, he has to get to grips with the fact that he has to do all of those things for himself, because he need to see that he matters not only to her but that he needs to matter to himself. Can he see that he is worth all the tears that she has shed over him?
I have read so many books that have pulled at my heartstrings and have left me a sobbing mess in the corner.
I have read countless books that have left me completely confused and bemused by the feelings that they have extricated from me…but this…heck this torn my heart out, stamped all over it and then stood me in the corner with a gaping wound in my chest as it tried to stuff the remnants of my heart back in.
This is destructive but in a beautiful way because as hard as it is, it is handled with the deftest of touches and for exactly the right reason. I could spend the rest of the year on my knees trying to pick up the pieces of my heart now that I have finished the book and I don’t believe for one minute I would ever find them all, this has left its mark, I feel shredded but thankful.
This is unconditional love at its very best and it is a book that might initially make you sad but will leave you safe in the knowledge that you have read something very special.
"I am my past. Ugly and polluted. Breathing but barely alive."
Although Camden found love in Yanelys and her family, he couldn't figure out how to accept the gift of love they gave him. To Camden, he didn't deserve to have love or happiness. His story shows the unfortunate life of an abused child....sad but true. The difference for Camden is Yanelys. She recognized a strength in Camden that he could see in himself. Pieces of Camden takes us through the life of Camden and Yanelys as children into adulthood. Although the story starts in their childhood, it is their adult life that changed everything. The punishment Camden puts himself through and in turn Yanelys truly broke my heart.
“Your journey was never about becoming something, but unbecoming everything that isn’t you. These insecurities and self-hatred you hold on to so tightly are destroying you. You can’t be who you’re meant to be until you let them go.”
Can Camden put his pieces together to become the man he deserves to be? Can he be the man Yanelys needs? You will have to read to find out. This book is a truly beautiful story. It is a story that stays in your heart. I highly recommend this book. Thank you, Yessi Smith, for this story that touched my soul. I can't wait for more.
I received an ARC for an honest review.
From the first few pages of Pieces of Camden, I was gripped, I literally could not put it down, close the kindle app, and you get the point of what I am trying to say. Pieces of Camden is a beautiful story but it is also serious and dark, Yessi has the talent of taking her reader’s on a journey, there are many twists and turn’s and sometimes you don’t know how the journey is going to end, and what your emotional state is going to be at the end. She makes her readers desperate for more even after leaving them an emotional wreck!
This book has a bit of everything from love, forgiveness (Redemption from past sins) and overcoming past struggles and addictions.
Camden has loved Yanelys near enough most of his life, but he has also struggled all of his life, the only person he can rely on for help and to be by his side is Yanelys. She means the world to him but he doesn’t want to hurt her or mess her life up by being by his side, so Camden makes the decision to leave. Leave Yanelys to get on with her life and not to have him dragging her down.
Years later Camden returns, worse off then he left and with more struggles then ever before, will Yanelys return to his side? Will she help Camden overcome his struggles? And more importantly, will Camden fight for what is his and what he wants?
This book is one of my top reads of 2016 so far! Pieces of Camden made me ugly cry so hard that at points I could barely read the words! An emotional rollercoaster that when I had finished reading, I was thinking ‘’WOW I need a glass of jack and a cigarette, to process what I am feeling right now!’’
