They now highly regarded as the forerunners in late 80's, early 90s technical death metal. Atheist are more than a death metal band though, blending jazz and interesting latin influences into their music, utterly unique. This is certainly the most death metal sounding of Athiests catalogue, with excellent musicianship from all members. Some progressions are slightly less obvious on this than on Unquestionable Presence, but you will need to own all three of Athiests albums to fully appreciate this truly amazing band.

Very challenging Death/Jazz metal music with outstanding musicianship of all four band members - particularly their amazing bassist, Roger Patterson, who was killed when their tour vehicle crashed (before Unquestionable Presence was released).
This is a very good debut album with very sharp and sometimes jarring time changes and some very catchy riffs ('I Deny' especially). The vocals are a bit variable on this album and the diction isn't always that good but the rest of the music easily makes up for it. 4.5/5 would be the most accurate mark for this album as it is more 'Death Metal' than the others and I don't think it is quite as easy to appreciate from a non-metal perspective.

Atheist were legendary pioneers of a new technical style of death metal that influenced many bands in the genre (and also sadly famous for the untimely death of their bass player), but somehow despite being a death metal fan at the time this band just passed me by. Thanks to this new re-issue by Relapse (complete with 9 demo tracks) I can finally get to hear this band and see what all the fuss was about. This is real top quality technical death metal, and the debt owed by the likes of Sadus and latter-day Death and Pestilence is obvious – the best indication of how ahead of it’s time this was is the fact that an album from 1990 can still sound so fresh 15 years later. If you missed them at the time don’t miss this new opportunity to pick up some fantastic death metal!

Only their follow up is better than this album. Masterful use of Thrash, Death metal and Jazz, all rolled up as one.
