This is a wonderfully, funny book that made our children laugh out loud, as indeed have the rest of the Large family's adventures.
Strange as it may seem, elephants are large and, whisper it carefully, may even be considered fat, so the notion of them having to go on a diet of watercress soup and daily jogs is funny.
If the shocking notion of an elephant having 'wobbly bits' is going to cause young children to have body image issues, perhaps we should additionally worry that they will also be demanding plastic surgery after comparing their noses to that of a trunk.
Enjoy this hilarious book for what it is, feed your children a balanced diet with masses of exercise and try to get out more.
To sum up it starts with the mother elephant declaring "I'm fat" and the baby agreeing by saying "wibble-wobble". The mum then forces them all onto a "healthy diet" which very unhealthy and anorexic-like. Watercress soup with water for dinner. I quote "It was awful. Every morning there was healthy breakfast followed by exercises. Then there was healthy tea followed by a healthy jog. By the time evening came everyone felt terrible". After the story had finished my daughter declared "I do not want to go on a healthy jog".
It is just wrong in so many ways. Highlighting body image to young children, Anorexic diets, Negative messages about exercising and vegetables. The word "fat" and "diet" being seen as a normal thing. Saying you are fat when you are not. It is just very, very wrong and dangerous.
