Pie in the Sky is a story about a detective, one Henry Crabbe, who has every intention of retiring from the police to persue his passion of cooking by opening a local restaurant with his wife.
Unfortunately, his last case goes awry and the suspect gets away. Henry's boss, DI Fisher, realises that Henry has made his life easy up until this point, doing all the work while he claims the credit. When DI Fisher finds out about the case, he tells Crabbe that there is no way that he will be allowed to leave the force while there is an investigation into his conduct in the case.
So begins Henry's problem - valiently attempting to open a local restaurant with his wife (who, being completely immune to Henry's amazing talents in the kitchen, prefers eating a bag of prawn-flavoured crisps) and solving local murders on the side when DI Fisher comes knocking.
The thing about the show that makes it so appealing is the quality of the characters. Richard Griffiths, who plays Henry Crabbe, is simply wonderful, drawing the viewer in to his daily struggles while still keeping a dry sense of humour about him. Margaret, played by Maggie Steed, is delightful. She is one of the most believable wives on television and has quite a fire in her when she gets worked up.
There are only a few frustrating moments while watching the show, namely seeing Henry do all of DI Fisher's work while he takes the credit.Read more ›
The show stars Richard Griffiths (a Tony-winner on Broadway for "The History Boys," also the film of the same name, The History Boys [DVD] ; he's also featured in the Harry Potter films); and make no mistake about it, along with his everyman looks, the man can act. I saw him in "The History Boys" on Broadway, and his performance certainly rated that Tony. He plays Detective Inspector Henry Crabbe, an intelligent, sensible, mild-mannered man, who, after 25 years on the force, has lost his hunger for what the job can provide, and is ready to pack it in and open his own restaurant, "Pie in the Sky." But the police force isn't ready to let him go. So he bounces back and forth, cooking delectable steak and kidney pies, and solving crimes. "The Times [U.K.]" describes the show as "as much a pleasure for culinary enthusiasts as it is for crime fans," and, by Jove, I think they've got it.
Griffiths receives solid support from Maggie Steed (Shine On Harvey Moon - 25th Anniversary Edition [DVD] ), as Margaret, his accountant wife, who's not all that pleased at suddenly finding herself a restaurateur. The rest of the company, led by Malcolm Sinclair (...Read more ›
Luckily they made a few series but watching the last one is like losing an old friend
Henry Crabb is a detective and a chef with a restaraunt and it is the juxtaposition of these two professions that provides most of the plots. The show is well written and the main characters grow as the series progresses.
