Product Description

2007 debut album from the multi-talented X-Factor contestant who plays both piano and guitar. Picture Of You features original songs written by Ben that encapsulate the depth and style that made him a star and finalist on X Factor. Ben has also recorded classic tracks that he performed on the show including Dont Wanna Miss A Thing which was originally performed by Aerosmith, Somebody to Love by Queen and Maggie May by Rod Stewart . The album has been produced by Brian Rawling and recorded at the legendary Olympic Studios (The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Led Zeppelin etc) with his world-class band, which includes bass player Pino Pallidino (The Who, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton). Features the single Beside You. Portrait.

BBC Review

Who could have guessed that the words 'X-Factor' and 'quality' would ever be linked in one sentence? But here's the proof!yes, ladies and gentlemen, the relentless freak show-cum-faux 'talent' show that we love to gawp at on a Saturday night seems to have actually found someone who may survive the cruel seas of tabloid popularity and become a voice to remember.

And that's the clue to Ben Mills' success - the voice. Like Will Young before him, Mills' performances left you in no doubt that he was set to win. But unlike Young this is rawer, grittier and ten times more real. Like some hybrid of Rod Stewart (whose ''Maggie May'' is tackled here), Leonard Cohen and Joe Cocker (likewise 'A Little Help From My Friend' - Joe's signature tune), Mill's throat seems world-weary beyond his years.

The only quibble at this stage would be with his choice of material. The aforementioned tracks are too obvious and show that this album was probably assembled with some haste to cash in on the new-found status. But frankly, faced with such obvious raw talent, you just know that Ben's here to stay, and hopefully put a little more thought into his next album. Watch this space! --Chris Jones

Rod Stewart heard Ben's amazing voice on X-factor and gave him some good advise: "stay focussed". Unfortunately, the music industry is not what it was in Mr Stewart's day and, in spite of his obvious talent, Ben has been forced to sell a little piece of his soul to break through to the mass market. This debut album is a hybrid, part X-factor/part Ben Mills. It has been produced in a great rush, no doubt to cash in on the X-factor circus. Nevertheless, you can still sense the man's tremendous potential - a deep rock-soul voice that can only improve with age and experience. If the moguls at Sony allow him the time and space to develop at his own pace, then we are all in for a treat, 'cos it's clear that Ben has the heart and soul of a real star. I predict this is just the beginning, and X-factor will soon be a distant memory.....

I bought this CD on Amazon as soon as it was released as I'd been a fan of Ben on X Factor and followed his progress throughout the show. The thing I found most appealing was the gravelly raw of his voice which he was able to control expertly, often tempering it with the softer, more melodic side of his range.- excellent!

The performance I though was genuinely AMAZING was his interpretation of Queen's Somebody To Love complete with clever re-arrangement and gospel choir - It alone would have been worth the price of the CD.

Here's the down side - It would seem that his musical creative team has `tamed' his voice and packaged him up to near `easy listening'. He's a lion of a singer and shouldn't be shaped into anything less - It's what his supporters would have found appealing in the first place.

The CD is just about OK when it could have been so much more - missed opportunity I'm afraid. On a personal note, I'm disappointed by the version of Somebody To Love on this CD, especially as I've heard what Ben can really do.

Ps

Little note on Jessica Stone's comments below - it's refreshing to have talented singers about who aren't Boy Band clones and who haven't been polished, air brushed and manufactured out of reality. Ben is a singer, not an ornament - let's try to applaud real, raw talent in all its shapes and sizes!

Picture of You is a brilliant album by the Xfactor semi finalist Ben Mills. Ben's voice is very unique and each track is brilliant. Normally on albums that I buy, I listen to only one or two tracks but on this I play it all over and over again! Ben's own song 'Beside You' (track number 1) is probably one of the best tracks on the album and in my opinion it should be number 1 in the charts!

Brilliant album. This guy can sing!!! he really is a new Rod Stewart...if not better! His voice is amazing and i can listen to his album over and over again. He really deserves to go far and i look forward to his next album. Ben is a natural artist and i love that husky voice...so much soul and character. I have not been this excited about a new artist for a very very long time! i actually saw the x-factor by coincidence! and when i saw Ben i decided to keep watching! i wish him all the success in the world!

Although I thought Ben was great on the X Factor and even better on the live tour (although it was a shame we didn't see [...]), I was slightly skeptical about the album. How wrong was I!!
I know some of the tracks are Ben's own and although there are quite a few tracks I've never heard before, they're all fantastic!
If you liked seeing Ben on the TV, you like Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart or anyone else in that sort of style and genre, then buy this. If you don't, then go and buy this anyway because it's still a great album.

I'm ashamed of myself for writing this review, but felt that one thing had to be made clear. This is not a great album. However, if you want to hear the best voice this side of Sam Cooke sing Bring It On Home To Me, buy it. I've not heard any other contemporary artist sing Bring It On Home as good as Sam Cooke did, but Mills manages it. In fact, I wish there were no backing music behind Mills on that number, because his voice carries it so well. Best voice I have ever heard on any show like X Factor, including American Idol. Hands down. Three for the album, four for the voice.

SonyBMG have placed a media player on the official website (.....) and it contains previews of all the tracks featured on the album. If you loved Ben during his time on the X Factor, you will love him even more once you've heard these songs. While it contains the inevitable covers, and fantastic covers at that, there are 6 brand new tracks, written or co-written by Ben, which stand head and shoulders above. Ben's skills as an accomplished writer shine through and the depth and sincerity in his voice is simply amazing.

I personally cannot wait until my copy of this album turns up and I have a feeling that the rest of my cd collection will then be redundant!

From what I've heard from Ben off of the official site and any other previews I've seen and also live gigs I've been to. Ben is the best in well over a decade. Rock has been left in the dust for so long with all the pop around, listening to this album is a breath of fresh air, it's high class and deserves to be a number 1 hit. Its a must for 2007.
