Product Description

About the Author

Pauline Hall graduated from the Royal Academy of Music and then taught in schools and privately. Whilst living and teaching in Harrogate she felt the need for a piano tutor which made learning fun, and which progressed at the pace of her slowest learner. She started by writing little tunes in pupils' notebooks, and these formed the basis of Tunes for Ten Fingers; the Piano Time series developed from this.

The books in this series are ideal for Children or Adults to follow and learn to play the piano (or keyboard). I teach my granddaughter using these books, and I must say that I don't remember my books being as informative as these as a young girl learning. There is lots of information learners can revise on their own included in the books, including the correct fingering, timing, etc. Everything is well laid out and explained and the lessons are carefully stepped. An absolute beginner (including adults) should start with the earliest books and work through to the more complicated lessons in later books without skipping any stages. In my opinion, Pauline Hall has got it absolutely right and I think her methods of teaching and advancement are exemplary. I had a different book by another author, for children, which progressed far too steeply and resulted in my granddaughter feeling frustrated and discouraged - the last thing anyone would want. The size of the Pauline Hall's books are ideal and easy to see, with plenty of illustrations. Also, they are not too thick that you cannot keep them open at the correct page.

As a piano teacher, I find the Piano Time Series excellent for my 9/10+ year old beginners as it looks cool, nicely laid out with eye catching pictures and the tunes are fun with duets included. There are also puzzles & quizzes to consolidate their musical knowledge along the way. They are slightly more expensive but I do believe you get VFM. One of my capable pupils, a boy of 10 years took a good three terms to get through Book 1 and I expect that he shall take the same amount of time to finish book 2 or even possibly longer. We shall see!

I've tried several different teaching methods but nearly always come back to Pauline Hall. The early books are excellent, reminding pupils about hand position as well as frequent reminders about note values / reading / dynamics etc. There are some sweet duets, with the teacher playing alongside the pupil and some more well-known arrangements in this book.

I ordered this after picking up a second hand copy and being impressed with its approach to learning and good variety of pieces. BUT this is a new edition - although it doesn't say so on the front - from 2004. It is completely updated - not just the cover. At least half the pieces are different, and by different composers, from those in the earlier edition. They are not nearly as accessible or, from the pupil's point of view, well thought-out in terms of difficulty and progression. When a new idea is introduced, the following pieces are often too complex, having additional problematic areas or pitfalls to work through. The old edition (mine is 1989) would get 5 stars from me, but not this one, I'm afraid.

Like all of Pauline Hall's books this is amazing my daughter who has learning difficulties and has high tone deafness found all the books from this series to be the best to learn from even her piano teachers recommended them. They have many easy songs to learn and step by step instructions, fun games and puzzles to do, they are bright and fun books to learn from and ideal for children of all ages to learn from
