Product Description

Pianist Boris Giltburg – winner of the 2013 Queen Elisabeth Competition – releases his second recording on Orchid Classics, following his acclaimed Prokofiev War Sonatas release of 2012 – ORC100023.

ORC100023 received huge critical acclaim, including a Gramophone ‘Editor’s Choice’, and a 5-star review in the Daily Telegraph.

Review

The ultimate challenge of Liszt's hell and heaven gets perhaps the finest performance of all, showing us the structure and effortlessly painting the poignancy and pride of redemption. Performance **** Recording ***** --BBC Music Magazine, Nov'13

This performance genuinely makes you hear the music in a new light, just as his gifts of litheness, tenderness and grandeur open up beautifully fresh perspectives in the Grieg. His command of the Liszt language is equally compelling, its broad passionate sweep embracing brooding intimacy and bravura with a rich range of inflection. All in all, a recital not to be missed. **** --Telegraph, 04/10/13

The playing is an unalloyed delight, rich in character, devoid of distracting tricks. **** RECORD OF THE WEEK --Sinfini Music, 07/1013

Finely recorded, this is a record for everyone's delectation and I can scarcely wait to hear Giltburg in other works from his already formidable repertoire. GRAMOPHONE CHOICE --Gramophone, Oct'13

The playing is an unalloyed delight, rich in character, devoid of distracting tricks. **** RECORD OF THE WEEK --Sinfini Music, 07/1013

I saw Boris Giltburg perform Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No.3 earlier in the year in Glasgow with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. He was superb and I went on to Amazon soon afterwards to see if he had recorded any of Rachmaninov's Piano Concertos but so far he hasn't.
The nearest we are going to get at the moment is this CD Giltburg recorded of Romantic Sonatas in 2012 for Orchid Classics. Apart from Piano Sonatas by Grieg and Liszt it also includes Rachmaninov's Piano Sonata No.2, which he plays beautifully especially in the second movement. He does have a wonderfully poetic style, which he conveys in all these Piano Sonatas, and I look forward to more recordings from him including Piano Concertos as well as solo works.

Purchased as a result of hearing a review on Radio 3 and it lived up to expectation. Giltburg gets under the skin of the Liszt and turns in an exciting yet deeply considered performance - up there with the best.
The Grieg was unfamiliar to me but Giltburg is persuasive and I shall enjoy listening again. It is interesting to hear the 'reduced' 1931 version of the Rachmaninov 2nd sonata - I wasn't aware there was a revision. Once again Giltburg plays with great sensitivity and flair.
Highly recommended.

This is a great recording of some very difficult music. It deserves good recognition, as did his first CD on Orchid Classics. IF you like solo piano and you get chance to see Boris live then take it. He's recently won the Queen Elisabeth competition in Brussels - and you'll soon see why. Highly recommended.
