I've been using Photoshop regularly for a lot of years but certainly wouldn't consider myself any kind of expert. Being mostly self-taught means I've learned how to do a few quite sophisticated things without having learned some of the most basic - so I leapfrogged the A, B and C's and went straight to the X, Y and Z's, which is never the best strategy. This book is a great introduction to the Photoshop alphabet so new users or experienced ones with gaps in their knowledge should find things worth learning here. The book comes with a DVD containing the source files for each lesson, so you follow each chapter using the same images as shown in the book and in the accompanying videos. There is so much to learn in Photoshop that it's difficult to navigate it all and the book inevitably has to take a slightly curious route, introducing advanced techniques early on without getting into detailed explanations - for example you'll use an Adjustment Layer in Chapter 2 but they won't be discussed in detail until Chapter 10. However this approach makes it feel like nothing is being held back from you and you're learning without being forced to take baby-steps, although it might seem slightly illogical sometimes especially to new Photoshop users. The lessons themselves are concise and easy-to-follow and you can move through the book quickly, picking up tips and techniques as you go. I did find some of the accompanying text around the lessons a bit over-done, there are too many warnings about mistakes you might make or things that can go wrong. I've found that's usually too much information for new users and just ends up being confusing, it's better to save such details for troubleshooting tips at the end rather than warnings at the beginning.Read more ›

I've been looking for a Photoshop course for a long time, following a tw-day course I took at the London School of Journalism. It's not a bad book, but it's very technical. Certainly study-orientated, for professional designers, not for people who just want to have an idea on how to do basic photo editing. It contains a lot of programming that I'll never use. but I'm not holding this against the book: it is ultimately a manual.

This book contains all the information you need to go from someone who hasn't got a clue how to use the most basic functions of Photoshop, to a proficient photo editor who understands how to make the most of everything this software has to offer.

The book is easy to read, simple to follow, and gives very clear step by step instructions. It doesn't assume any prior knowledge of the software or of photo editing in general, and really gets down to the basics of 'click this part of this panel here, and then click this button here' etc. There are lots and lots of screencap style illustrations to help you along, and also a DVD with simple projects on it.

Great for a beginner, and also useful for those who know a little about photo editing but would like to develop their skills further, this is the sort of manual that I wish came as standard with the software!

This book is an excellent and very informative guide to Photoshop CC (Creative Cloud). The book is very well thought out, and it takes you from very basic techniques right up to advanced ones. I've been using Photoshop since the late nineties when I used it for my course work in English for illustrations/photos. I've used Photoshop pretty regularly since then. I am a very seasoned user of Photoshop and even I still picked up some great tips from this book. I feel this book is more aimed at beginners and it would serve them the best. I found myself concentrating on the latter part of the book. The accompanying disc is also very good.
Very clearly written and well recommended for the audience I spoke of above.

'Photoshop CC Digital Classroom

This is an excellent book which guides you through the maze of photoshop with easily understood written instruction supported by its dvd. As the book is split into separate lessons you learn at your own pace and commands and functions covered in early lessons are reinforced as you progress. I had enrolled in photoshop classes and quite honestly if I had invested in this book in the first place I could have saved myself the price of the classes which were inferior, muddled and confusing. If you are thinking of using photoshop invest in the book you wont regret it.
A very useful book.

I've used Photoshop since version 4 - almost 20 years. It's one of those applications that you can know well but always learn something new from, so books like this are really good, even for the old hands.

This covers all the main areas with step by step guides. It also helpfully has a good key reference and index which makes jumping around (the way I use the book) easy.

Easy to use as a reference, to dip in and out of and as a tutorial. Quality and clarity are excellent too.

Overall a very good Photoshop title and recommended.

The book has clear, helpful examples which are backed up with exercises on the CD. I have worked through the CD over a few hours and I am now using the book to practice using my own images. I have acquired several PhotoShop guides over the years, but this is by far the best for those who learn better hands on and through repetition. The book and videos show the variety of routes to the same solution including shortcuts.
