Format: Paperback
Adobe's Lightroom is a complex package which provides an essential tool for any photographer who shoots in RAW format (with or without JPG or TIFF accompaniment) or for those cameras that use DNG format which is Adobe's own proprietary RAW format which some camera manufacturers offer instead of their own proprietary format. Many camera manufacturers provide software that enables their own RAW files to be worked upon to some extent but if you own another camera of a different brand, it will likely be of no use. Lightroom is the universal solution to this problem. Additionally, there are a few programs that can open RAW files of several formats, view them and perhaps modify them in some minor way, but fall short of Lightroom's potential. Lightroom does it better than most. Once you have adjusted that RAW file within Lightroom to however you wish it to be presented, you can then directly instruct Lightroom to open that file complete with whatever corrections have been made within Photoshop so that you can add any extras, resize it etc.

There are several books that explain Lightroom's features and processes and several more that do the same for Photoshop and most of them have substantially more pages than this book offers. There aren't too many that treat the two programs as the halves of a more complete partnership than either alone. This book fills that gap and sometimes offers additional advice that may be missing from other books concerning either program in isolation.

I have just downloaded the Kindle edition. Looking for the Table of Contents I was amazed to find that the download edition does not include one. No matter how good a book it may be, I find it astonishing that a technical guide of 344 pages comes without such an essential tool, especially one that is supposed to help with workflow. Yes, there is a search option but there is no help with the basic structure of the book. Disappointing start.

3.0 out of 5 stars I recommend The Creative Digital Darkroom for a detailed step by ... 9 Jan. 2015
By NomdePlume - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
The book is straightforward, but not very comprehensive. Very basic. It's more for casual photographers wanting to understand how Photoshop works so they can do image enhancements than it is for people who want to use other Photoshop tools or for serious photographers/designers. There's no discussion of 3D, for example, and the first 5 chapters are all about filetypes, workflow, organizing, etc. There's also not enough explaining of the principle at work behind the use of the tools for me to be able to really understand what is going on and apply it to something else. It also has a cutesy casual tone at times that I find really irritating.

I recommend The Creative Digital Darkroom for a detailed step by step discussion of how to use the tools and what is happening when you make certain adjustments, such as how the white point moves or the use of a clear layer to do blending.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book Exploring Adobe Post Processing Programs 1 April 2013
By Richard W. Middaugh - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
As an amateur user of both Lightroom 4 and Photoshop 6, I was concerned about the interface of the two programs for post processing the raw images I take. This book answers that question very effectively. It also fits Adobe Camera Raw and Bridge into the workflow. In addition, it deals with the organization, archiving and file management of images in a concise and easy to understand manner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Complete guide for CS6 and Lightroom 4 2 Oct. 2013
By Erkki Heliö - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I've been using Photoshop for several years already. When updating to CS6 I finally decided to buy a handbook as well, The book seems to be a complete presentation of both tools: well illustrated containing hands on instructions. Time will tell how well the soft cover book will stay in one piece. Hard cover issue might withstand normal "use and abuse" better.
3.0 out of 5 stars You need an expert to unlock the mystery to using Lightroom & Photoshop 18 Mar. 2013
By E. Cramer - Published on Amazon.com

There is so much that these programs do that the help screens(no such thing as a manual any more) can teach you. This book is very good a explaining the technical aspects of Lightroom 4 & CS6 Photoshop. I learned some things that I did not know or understand before reading the book. I read Scott Kelby's book on Lightroom 4 and that is the best one for understanding the whole work flow process and how Lightroom can make it easier for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to read, easy to use, easy to refrence 10 Aug. 2013
By E. Kirstein - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I liked this handbook. It's content is easy to understand and it doesn't make you read things that aren't relevant. Since it is useful for 3 different types of programs, it may not be as worth it to buy if you only have one of the applications.
