Product Description

This book was immediately attractive because it approached travel with an obvious objective: taking pictures in a particular place. It designates its audience in the very title. The book focuses on being at the right place at the right time, which is an uncommon element in travel books. This is especially important for a place like Maui, because, as Peebles points out, the weather is unpredictable. He starts out with "How I Photograph Maui," which provides a basic overview of what to look for when setting up a shoot. Then he plunges into technical information about which cameras, lenses and settings are appropriate for the area and what to watch for on the island in terms of weather, theft, locals, nature and wildlife. After this, the book is divided into locations: The Hana Coast, Central Maui, Haleakala and Upcountry, etc. Each of the sections has a description of the area including sleeps, eats, activities and events as well as good overlooks and hikes. He drops in information about when to be where for best pictures, suggestions for equipment, exposure time and setup. The book is easy to read and not too overwhelming. The pictures are beautiful. My only suggestion would be to include a little bit more of the historical context of the places. --Judges' comments "Bronze medal, Guidebook category "

I have more than 10 photography guide books. I buy one for every trip. This is the worst of the lot. Out of all the pics in the book, maybe 2 or 3 are good, rest are avg or below avg. I think the author is just a normal dude who takes photos. I don't think he is a photographer. I m an amateur photographer and I feel that I can take better photos than whats in the book.
I bought this book because there was no other photography book about Maui. I m giving it a couple of stars because it had some moderately useful tips on where to go for landscape photography.
HASH(0xa1422420) out of 5 stars Good ideas; seems comprehensive for Maui 24 Jan. 2014

Had to cancel my trip to Maui (bummer), but this provided me with decent ideas, were I to have gone. I wish geographic-specific photography advice books would give very specific advice for the best spots to get the best or most iconographic pics, like the south end of this beach within 10 meters or so of the rock cluster, for example. The best geographic-specific photography advice book I have is for the SF Bay and NoCal area, and it listed exact locations for Yosemite National Park to frame the best views (and with best times of day, etc.). Almost not other books do this, of course, but this Maui book is still very solid for advice on general vicinities.
HASH(0xa14a957c) out of 5 stars Great Information When Planning Your Trip to Maui 26 Mar. 2012

Purchased this book as a guide while planning our trip to Maui. The book breaks down Maui into areas and explains each nicely. Gives locations to checkout as well as sites to maybe avoid, mentions information on what to look for as well as which trail to take to specific spots, even estimated walking distances. Points out spots to grab lunch and even times of day where locations photograph better. One of my favorites are the tips the author gives on related locations or topics, a lot of these I found very useful. This book is a great tool to use when planning a trip to Maui, thank you.
HASH(0xa182c2dc) out of 5 stars Great resource for photographers 11 Oct. 2014

I found this guide invaluable on my first trip to Maui. He descriptions of locations are detailed enough to help you decide if you want to visit. Although the guide is a few years old I still found the information to be accurate. The author's comments about the crowd and traffic dynamics on Maui through the day for different areas was also very helpful in planning my daily trips. This guide is highly recommend for photographers or general tourists interested in finding some interesting niches in Maui.

HASH(0xa1a8cb10) out of 5 stars Spend the money on guidebooks 29 Mar. 2013

The author tried to share information about Maui but I feel a guidebook would be more useful.

Especially for someone who know photography many of the trips given are known already.
Overall I am not satisfied because I have seen other guidebooks (Tetons book by Jeff Clow) and they really go into details of how to photograph awesome locations.
This book lacks depth and is not worth the money.
