Collapsible Background

The PhotoSEL BD113WB Reversible Black/White Collapsible Background combines the two most often used colours into one background. It offers quick set-up and take-down for versatility and easy portability. It is perfect for head and shoulder portraiture as well as deposition-type videos. It can be positioned vertically or horizontally to suit your subject and, when you are done, it collapses into a third of its size and stores in the included flat circular carry bag.

Snaps Open and Folds Down with Minimal Effort

For the photographer who does on-the-fly head shots, this background can be a lifesaver. When used in conjunction with the optional PhotoSEL Background Support System or propped up against a wall, this background can be taken anywhere to rapidly shoot multiple subjects.       The white could be a bit better (slightly grey) but all in all its great to use as a reflector, dampener and as a background. Obviously it wrinkles so if your subject is close to it (unless ur doing head shots) photoshop/low dof is required. T-Shirty type material. But I use it a lot, and people keep borrowing it so its already a good buy. Folds up - really transportable (and I don't have a car).

      NIGHTMARE for me to get back into the shape required for packaging to begin with. Luckily I practiced A LOT at home before using it in any clients/sitters homes.

      For clarity, I enumerate my thoughts:
      1. The item arrived (by UPS) one day before scheduled in acknowledgement e-mail (Super saver method).
      2. It comes in a PhotoSEL black zipped case, c.27 inches in diameter, so is portable for location shoots and stores away well.
      3. It pops out to a relatively huge size and, having no stand, can be propped against a wall vertically or horizontally, with one short edge having a small loop (place it out of your frame).
      4. Note that the rounded rectangular shape means that, in the vertical mode, a standing figure would need to keep their feet in the middle, else you would need to clone out the odd corners.
      5. The black side presents a usefully dark (black) background for portrait or full figure shots (if the subject is not too tall). Worked ok indoors with available light from a large window.
      6. The white side I found less satisfactory for these reasons: fabric a little creased towards the corners; fabric is slightly off-white to very pale grey; a narrow black band edges the backdrop on this side.
      7. The backdrop could also be rested, for example, horizontally along the back of a sofa so as to give a plain background to a seated person, if the wall itself was not plain enough.
      8. You just need to contain your subject within the confines of the backdrop and crop off any unwanted margins in your photo processing application.
      9. Head and shoulders or waist-up shots are easier to achieve than full figure shots unless the subject's feet are kept tidy.
      10. I haven't tried it, but the white side might also be used as a large reflector.
      11. There are no instructions on how to fold it up! There is a certain knack which you can learn from various online videos (the B&H one on YouTube is good). Take care not to break objects indoors!
      12. Summary: good to have if used within its size limitations if you cannot go up to a larger set-up such as a paper roll on stands.

      This background is superb.

      I was on a limited budget and saw this which seemed to fit the bill. I have used it many times and with excellent results. The white side reflects light excellently and the black side doesn't seem to leak any when used with flash.

      It is a big background - It is a perfect size for a portable background. It folds away well into the circular carry case it comes with - it is a nightmare at first when you try packing it away but look on youtube for videos as this is how I learnt how to fold it away.

      It took me 30 minutes of frustration and a lot of profanity before I looked on youtube and learnt how to fold it away. Once you do it once or twice it is really easy to put away though. Be careful when opening it up - it springs open and due to its size it will knock things flying if you are not very careful when taking it out of the bag and unfolding it!!

      You will need to rest it against something as it isn't weighted and after being folded away it can become a little bent so take care when folding away.

      Overall it is a fantastic background which is excellent value. it does exactly as I wanted/needed it to.

      Just take care when opening it up and read up on how to put it away! practice this before you take it anywhere as it will be embarrassing taking 30 minutes putting it away for the first time!

      As the previous reviewer states a little tricky top fold up until you have the knack. I recommend one of the various You Tube videos, got me sorted. Other than that a good product that does what it says on the tin. Oh, and watch out for your nose when it springs open - ouch! ********* Update - two and a half years down the line and with VERY light usage, used less than once a month, the pop rivets holding the spring steel frame together have sheared rendering this only suitable for the bin. So, from 4 stars to 3 *********

      I have two significant issues with this product. First of all the background is wrinkly and creased. To get a truly effective background it needs to be steamed once opened which is totally useless if you are travelling with it.

      Secondly, the rather heavy frame warped after being folded up after the very first use. It was folded correctly (it does require a little bit of nous to do it - see You Tube) and the next time it was opened it would not go flat.

      Totally rubbish, and apparently I have just missed the return window in Amazon to make it even worse.

      The white side can also be used as a reflector and the black side to cut off light as a large 'flag'

      The black is grey and the white creases too much. The poor quality bag it comes in broke within a week and difficult to transport without! For £60 I would expect a lot more. My advice.....Spend an extra £40 and get the lastolite background which has black velvet
