Serif have been producing there Photoplus series for some time and this is the latest version, although there are some improvements I am not sure that it is worth the upgrade if you have a previous version and it does all you want it to.
The reason I have bought this version is for 3 reasons:-
1 you can combine bracketed exposures into one photograph. An excellent addition if you need this option.
2 It has better support for RAW formatting, it claims most cameras are supported I have only tried Cannon and Olympus and both work fine. Again very useful if you need to manipulate uncompressed files (RAW is usually slightly compressed but not as much as the other formats)
3 The ability to open Photoshop files. This is the one aspect that let it down in that it did not manage to open all my photoshop files. To be fair it does warn about this in the small print.

As a complete package it compares favourably with a number of top end packages and it is much cheaper. There are numerous filters and effects plus the usual range of tools which are easy to use. As well as built in tutorials for anyone who is new to this type of product, so there is not a steep learning curve, there are a number of one click options like red eye reduction which works well.

SUMMARY
A complete photo manipulating package which will handle most file formats available and will do anything that the advanced amateur or beginer will need and very good value.

I can say that I have used many photo editing applications, from the budget end of the market up to industry accepted application such as Photoshop. I must say that Photoshop if you have deep pockets and a large disposable income to blow away is the one to go for, but if you do not have such pockets then this is the one to go for. You simply get so much for the money you pay, I bought mine from serif and payed a lot more than this which I had a moan and groan with them over and they refunded the difference to my card..how cool are serif!!!!

It simply blows Paint Shop Pro and Elements out of the water to be perfectly honest, and another thing that I like is that it works well with Page Plus X4, another great serif application. Basically I am able to work on all images from within the Page Plus environment. Please feel safe in purchasing serif software, you get a great deal for your money and the after sales service is second to none.

Just released [July 2009], PhotoPlus X3 is a great alternative to Adobe Elements 7 and Paint Shop Pro X2. It's strength is often it's price and it offers a few more features than Elements. Serif rarely sell via stores, and rely on word of mouth and cheap upgrade offers to get new users. The fact they have reached version thirteen in PhotoPlus shows they must certainly be doing a lot right. I always used Serif software (DrawPlus, PagePlus) at home until I got free licences of Adobe Creative Suite and MS Office Pro from work (which would cost me a few grand to buy myself). Even now, when I've had to pay with my own money for image editing software, I chose PhotoPlus X3 over Elements 7 or Corel's Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 (largely because of the low upgrade price). PhotoPlus can do everything essential I need to do - I use optical microscope imaging systems at work, and at home I'm a keen digital/film SLR photographer and slide scanning enthusiast.

Whats new? PhotoPlus X3 now has improved support for hi-end camera RAW images [e.g. CRW, CR2, ORF, NEF & Adobe DNG] and can also work with HDR [hi dynamic range] and 16-bit per channel photos, plus it has a good range of advanced editing tools. Although PhotoPlus Studio does let you create slideshows, burn discs and so on, it lags behind Elements photo database organiser's abilities. That said I shun such image databases, preferring the simplicity of logical folder names and Nero 8 burning software. Also, whereas PhotoPlus 11 [that's still available] runs on just about anything Pentium PC wise from Windows 98SE/ME to XP/2000 (not Vista), this new X3 version is certified for XP and Vista/Windows 7 only.

For a product of that price, it is astoundingly good value. It uses layers, clipping masks, and selection tools as competently as any photo editing product (although the magnetic lasso isn't as good with some tasks) and does it at about 5% of the price. For anyone who wants good photo editing tools, but thinks photoshop is too expensive, this is the product to get. Even photoshop users have admitted that this product is amazingly good gor its price.

I bought the Serif X3 Suite at a steal bargain of £50 for the whole range this included:
Drawplus
Photoplus
Movieplus
Pageplus
Scrapbook

Photoplus is the only one of these products I have had a issue with, for several months I had no issues with this product, then I'm still not completely sure what happened but the brushes no longer would work, if I even dared to click on the brush section to change the brush it would crash leaving me with Windows trying to figure out what was wrong, figuring that this was a simple uninstall then re install issue this is what I did, and it still wouldn't work. I tried installing it on a different computer and the brushes were there and everything runs smoothly. So in the end I ended up emailing the Youtube page, as I couldn't sign up to the Serif site at the time.
They promised me they would get back to me, that was over 6 months ago.
